To All:
Don was simply the best.
I first met Don when I was a young clerk in a law firm in the early 1970s. Don was always available to give advice about the court system and life in general. He encouraged me to go to law school and taught me the importance of helping others, which he himself did every day, whether that person was a judge, a pro se litigant or a senior partner in a law firm. He treated everyone the same. And of course, a day was never complete until Don grabbed you by the arm and told you one of his many stories. But most importantly, Don taught us to love family and never take life too seriously!
On behalf of the Managing Attorneys and Clerks Association, Inc., I extend my condolences to Don's family. His integrity, warmth and laughter will be missed but never forgotten.
Sincerely,
Henry J. Kennedy,
President, MACA, Inc.

Sorrowful Announcement is made of the death today of Chief Clerk Donal Duff (ret.), who served our court for almost four decades during which his assignments included serving as the Chief Clerk of our Motion Support Office (now General Clerks Office) and the Chief Clerk of our Judicial Support Office (now Matrimonial Support Office and Guardianship and Fiduciary Support Office).
Donal was of the "Greatest Generation" having served in the Navy during WWII, after which he joined the NYPD. He joined our court in 1957 and retired from the court in 1996. During his many years of very distinguished court service he was much admired by our Justices and by staff throughout the court, the County Clerk's Office and far beyond. Ever ready to be of help to anyone in need, he was greatly respected by the attorneys practicing in our court, including Managing Attorneys and Clerks from law firms large and small. Donal possessed a sparkling wit and brought the greatest good cheer to every setting. For those of us privileged to know and work with Donal, his passing is a great loss. All of us in the court stand on the shoulders of those who have preceded us and Donal, and notwithstanding his very svelte, runners frame had very broad "shoulders," indeed. Sadly, Donal's much loved wife Jane died only recently and for a period they were in the same hospital. Our sincerest condolences go out to their children and the Duff family.

Per Donal's daughter, the following was his favorite poem: Abou Ben Adhem Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!) Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace, And saw, within the moonlight in his room, Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom, An angel writing in a book of gold:— Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold, And to the Presence in the room he said "What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head, And with a look made of all sweet accord, Answered "The names of those who love the Lord." "And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so," Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low, But cheerly still, and said "I pray thee, then, Write me as one that loves his fellow men." The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night It came again with a great wakening light, And showed the names whom love of God had blessed, And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

I was one of the nurses who had the privilege of helping to care for Donal. Although he wasn't feeling well during most of the time I cared for him, it was easy to see he was a man of great intellect, kindness, and wit. I was there with Grace, his aide, the priest who anointed him, and his family when it became clear his time here on Earth was running out. I also got to hear his daughter read his favorite poem to him, Abou Ben Adhem by James Henry Leigh Hunt, which Donal memorized as a schoolboy. Now he is with his believed Jane, who was also one of my patients. I hope I made Donal's last days a little bit easier. To the Duff family, thank you for letting me be a part of his last hours. I vividly remember visiting my Uncle Donal at his offices at the NY State Supreme Court in lower Manhattan in the late 1980s, not long after I graduated from law school. My mother had urged me to visit with him for career advice, and I am so glad I did. He took my out to lunch at one of his favorite spots, and regaled me with stories about his life of public service. I would like to think it informed my now 24 years in federal government service as a lawyer in Washington, D.C. His example of humility and service, while maintaining optimism and good cheer, is a standard I try to pass along to younger lawyers I mentor these days.
On a later visit to see him and my Aunt Jane at their home on Grove Street in Waldwick, I brought them an ancient Mercedes-Benz coupe, a gift from my sister Alice and her husband Lee. Uncle Donal was so thrilled with the old car "Holy Mackerel, what beauty!" he exclaimed.
Uncle Donal was always happy and excited to see you; a man full of good cheer and warm feelings. Heaven is a happier place with his arrival.

Don helped me so much as a young lawyer in ways that I never appreciated then. I loved him like a brother. We used to have so much fun just talking about the law. When my wife Pat called me this morning with the news, I nearly collapsed. I share your grief, but I also share your pride in how he taught us to be kind to each other. I am so proud that I can say to the world: "Donal Duff was my friend". Sincerely, Dan Keenaghan

My fantastic Uncle Donal, following my Aunt and godmother Jane to head home to the Lord. Donal was, along with my own father, one of the classic loving, witty, and funny men of my youth. A gem of a man, who leave behind a legacy of laughs and love. Prayers and love to all the Duffs.
