Obituary of Evelyn Meyer

MEYER, Evelyn F. (nee Hansen) "Evie", age 79, of Wayne, NJ, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Beloved wife of LeRoy Meyer for 58 years. Devoted mother of Elyn Bischof and her husband Jonathan of Stratton, VT, Janice Martorelli and her husband Joseph of Wyckoff, and Dale Johnson and her husband Burr of Congers, NY. Beloved grandmother of Elayna, Lili, and Jamie Bischof, Katharine and Joseph Martorelli, and Ethan Johnson. Beloved sister of Marilyn Hams and her husband Thomas of Harrington Park. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Evelyn and Erling Hansen. She was born in Hoboken, raised in Union City and was a 53 year resident of Oakland. She graduated from Union Hill High School in Union City and completed courses at the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in NYC. She initially worked as a secretary for the Bell Telephone Co. in Union City, and ultimately retired after 15 years as secretary for the Child Psychologist of the Child Study Team for the Franklin Lakes Board of Education, but most of all she was a full time devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her life was filled with music which began as a lead vocalist in the annual Varsity Musicals while attending Union Hill HS. In 1967 she convinced her husband, who was singing and recording with the Will Bronson Singers, to start his own 'swing' vocal group, at which time he created the non-profit Roy Meyer Swingers, a 22 voice mixed group based in Oakland, in which she was a star solo performer for decades. She was most remembered by her beloved performances of "Second Hand Rose" and "The Trolley Song", where she totally enveloped and became the characters within. Her portrayal was deeply felt in the hearts of all. She also sang in the Chancel Choir of the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church since 1955, where she worked for a few years as secretary in the church office. She played leading roles in the "Frantic Follies"variety shows that she and her husband wrote and produced at the church for many years. She will be greatly missed by all. The Meyer family will receive family and friends on Thursday, December 29, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Funeral services will be held Friday, 10 AM at Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church, 454 Pulis Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, followed by a private interment in the Fairview Cemetery. Donations may be made in Evelyn's memory to Parkinsons Unity Walk, P.O.Box 275, Kingston, NJ 08528, www.unitywalk.org, or the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church.
