Whenever we were lucky enough to share a celebration at Pat's house, my husband Joe always looked forward to seeing Joe. He loved to sit and talk with him and was, I think, a little jealous of his physical strength and imposing posture. Joe always seemed happy to see me. Even in the later years when he had forgotten my name, he would say "Hello, Doll" whenever I walked onto Pat's porch on my way to pick up Aleah. And always with a wonderful smile that made me feel special. My life was a little bit better for having Joe in it, and I'll miss him.

Christmas parties at the firehouse with Santa... who looks somewhat familiar. 4th of July Parades, firetrucks, and a clown with a shovel following the horses?? who also looks somewhat familiar... Beer cans filling up a trailer (sorry, Father), parked in a summer home driveway, somewhere in Sound Beach, Long Island. A summer home in the mountains, with a ping pong table in the garage... who's gonna beat Pop?? Badminton in the backyard, catching salamanders and mooing at the cows. Lobster pots and steamers cooking out back while we climb and laugh our way into human pyramids on the grass. Tinkering, tinkering, tinkering, always in the garage, with who knows how many lawnmowers, and every tool known to man. And let's not forget that log splitter...
Work 8am, dinner 5pm, firehouse 6pm, Archie Bunker 9pm, The Honeymooners 10pm. "Good night Mama. Gimme a little kiss, will ya?"
Some years later: "Hi ya honey, how are ya? Gimme a little kiss will ya... I love ya honey." You know if that guy is bothering you, just let me know, I'll take care of it for ya." "No, that's ok daddy, that's Richard, my husband." "Oh, I didn't know that." "Yes, daddy we're married..." "Well, good for you! I wished you woulda told me."
Bedtime: 8 pm
"Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh... a....d....m... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name... this is Joe, Joe Bosotina, that's B-O-S-O-T-I-N-A. God bless my mother and father. God bless 'em lord... they lived to 110 years old. They both died of bad fish.
God bless my wife. Her name is Anna, that's A-N-N-A. God bless my son and his family. And my brothers and sister… God bless em! I didn't really know them, but I loved them... and they knew me, I think. And God bless you, and thank you for everything. I love ya..."
Bedtime: 10… 11… 12 midnight
"uh uh uh uh uh uh uh." "Daddy…..be quiet… stop talking and go to sleep." Covers come off the head. "I'm not talking!" "Yes you are. You're humming!" "I'm not humming!" "Yes you are humming. Be quiet. It's midnight. I need to go to sleep..." "Alright honey. I'll go to sleep now." Covers go over the head. "OK! goodnight daddy!" And as I walk out of the room, I hear, Goodnight, You son of a..... (sorry, Father)."
Now I go to sleep at night. Sometimes I can still hear the humming. I get up and I look, but there's nobody there. "And God bless you Daddy... and thank you for everything. We love you."

Here's to the man of the hour,
the Pop to our grandpop,
the cheese to our "lasang,"
the crunch to our sfogliadella,
the splitter to our wood,
the beer cans to our recycle bins...
the bee's knees.
We knew him as Pop, Poppy and of course, Joe Bos, Salud a Nui.
Father of five, grandfather of 13, great-grandfather of 21,
Friend of EVERYONE.
Founder of the October birthdays!
Sailor of the seven seas!
Fighter of a thousand fires!
Feller.... of WAAAYYY too many trees!
So, here's to Joe Bos...
the Yugoslav to our Italian,
the concrete to our patios... our driveways... our stoops... and our backyards,
the Hook & Ladder to our flames.
The Joe to our Johanns and our Josephs,
the Pop to our Nan,
the backbone to our family...
Here's to Joe Bos.

Dear Dad,
Thank you for being a good friend and Father. Thank you for being there when Cathy and I needed things like all the old car's you gave us when we were living in West New York. The times they broke down and you had me and you use the town garage to fix them. The times we went to the junk yard to get the transmissions. The time I called you to get your approval for the first house we bought on Coles Ave. The time you helped me with the cement patio, that wasn't easy. And all the work we did together through the years. Starting with the Long Island house, having the guys put up the foundation on the big room and you and I finishing it. At the Mountain house, when the local farmer's came over and you had to weld iron parts together for them. When my car's broke down and you loaned me the truck you had at that time. I always asked why you collected so many tools and you said,"even if you use it just once it's paid for itself". I live by that idea today and it's been really helpful. All the times you and Mom came up to the house and you knocked on the kitchen window, scaring the heck out of Cathy, at 8:30 in the morning. Always the funny guy. There were many, many more times too numerous to mention. I'll always have good memories of you. Thank you, Dad. Your loving Son-in-Law, Paul.

I've been so blessed to have such a loving and caring Grandfather all my life. From the time I was a small child and you brought home the rooster and duck for me and my cousin, Richard. Oh, how we played for hours. My memories of the "country house" will live with me forever. I'll never forget your years of service and dedication to the community, of Little Ferry, through your love of the firehouse. I remember driving with you down Rt. 46 and the fire whistle blowing, you immediately made a u-turn and headed straight for the firehouse, slowing down just enough to let me out. I loved my time at the firehouse, as well. Playing with bells on the truck was such fun. The Christmas parties and picnic's at the Firehouse and Legion are events that contribute to a child knowing she was loved and cherished by her Pop-Pop.
As an adult, I'll never forget You singing, "White Christmas" at our family gathering. The way you would offer to sweeten my coffee by stirring it with your pinky finger. How You called me "sugarplum" and "dear".
And when I had my son, Michael and you couldn't get it in your head to call him Mikey but rather Mickey. My children, although now twenty-one and eighteen will never forget you playing tricks with them, like when you would lose your arm in your sleeve or count the number of fingers on your hands coming up with eleven rather than ten.
Although my family has lived so far away from you and Nanny we knew we were loved and in each other's thoughts, and will live our lives forever knowing that we have had the best Pop-Pop in the world and we're the better for having you. All my Love, Tina

I will always remember my grandfather as the pillar of strength in our family. Getting together with my father and uncles and family to put down a patio or build a house. He could do anything. I will cherish those memories I have of him and am blessed to have been able to spend the last two months of his life with him at the nursing home just showing him love. I also feel blessed to be surrounded by my loving family at this time and always.

My condolences to the Bosotina family. Death is something we will never get use to. In fact, God's word refers to it as an enemy as 1 Corinthians 15:26 says: as the last enemy death is brought to nothing. Yes he will get rid of it forevet, never to return. May you find some comfort during the difficult days ahead, you and your family.
