Dr. James P. Verbist - Vice President- Bergen County Soccer Officials Association posted a condolence
Tuesday, December 27, 2011
I knew Steve going back to the 1970's. We officiated together over the past 30+ years and in the early 1980's we worked together in Paramus where I served as an Administrator. Simply saying the name Steve Konde evokes the words/thoughts: "man of honor", "integrity", "professional" and "caring". Words will never adequately describe Steve and his contibutions to officiating and coaching. Words will never ease the pain of his loss for his family and friends. Words will "honor" a man who for those that knew him will miss him. Words will "honor" a man who will be missed by family, friends and Bergen County Athletics. Finally, words will say what is in our hearts.....We will miss you and we pray that in your new life there is no pain or suffering and it will have a diamond to coach baseball and a field to referee soccer. Two of Steve's favorite things to do after loving and caring for his deeply loved family. May the Lord be with you.

Rose, Have thought about Steve several times through the years. I regret that we never were able to see eachother on a recent trip i took to Paramus. Steve was a great influence on me as a person, player and as a future high school baseball coach in South Carolina. I will keep all of you in my prayers. God Bless, Steve Grant.

I was very saddened to hear of Coach Konde's passing. He was a great coach, but much more important was a great man. He not only taught us how to be better baseball players, he taught us how to be better men. As a baseball and football coach myself, I always find myself repeating what Coach stressed with us: "First class all the way." He will be missed, and you have my deepest condolences on your loss.

(Resubmitted because of typos....my sincere apologies)
I remember Mr. Konde as a fair and ethical man who cared as much about teaching life lessons as he did about teaching "gym" class. I'm not sure if it was grade school or middle school, when he literally willed me to the top of the rope climb high above the gymnasium floor (at either George W. Hodgins or East Brook). What I do know is that if it weren't for motivators like Mr. Konde, I would not have developed enough self esteem to survive childhood confident nor caring enough to be a competent adult and nurturing parent. His lessons were often about leadership and character as much as they were about performance. He will be surely and sorely missed. Sean Herbert PHS Class of 1985.

My deepest condolences to Mr. Konde's family and loved ones. Thoughts and prayers are with you all as you struggle through this difficult time. As one of Mr. K's former PHS students, I will always remember him fondly with a whistle around his neck, coaxing us on to be physically fit :)
