Peace be with you, dear Jean and Nancy. It has been an honor and joy to have known and shared a friendship with Bart for more than sixty years. A kind and loving man who became in his last year "George's best friend!" You are already missed, Bart.

Dear Jean and Nancy, We were sorry to hear about Bart's passing. We pray that God will surround you with his love, and comfort you with his spirit during these difficult days. We have wonderful memories of the great times we had with you in your home. We loved Bart and his positive personality and genuine love toward everyone. He had a strong faith and how wonderful it is to know he is in the presence of God, seeing him face to face. The words of the last stanza of the hymn, "Be Still my Soul" are so beautiful: "Be still, my soul the hour is hastening on when we shall be forever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still my soul when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last." May God bless you. With our love and sympathy, Karen and Jake

Loving Tribute to Bart by Sister-in-Law Ruth Stratton Smith My first recollection of Bart is of him singing in the first Presbyterian choir with my piano teacher, Harry Thurber as organist and choir director. Next thing I knew Bart was dating my sister Jean. I coaxed it along as a bratty little sister by playing the wedding march when he came to pick her up. I think if the truth were told Bart liked it - but Jean probably could have “strung me up.” Anyway, it worked and they became a happily married couple for 61 years. Besides being “crazy about Jean" he was a devoted father to Nancy and Don and grandfather to Ellen. All his active years Bart was the low bass in church choirs and choral groups beginning with Miss Waller’s Glee Club in high school, and it must be said that he was a Bach enthusiast. Bart was a camera buff. He and our dad loved talking together about photography and Marlow Pumps where they both worked, which gave them a special friendship and bond. He enjoyed learning and was largely self-taught through extensive reading. He shared his knowledge tutoring and was keen up to his last days.

Dear Jean and Nancy, On behalf of the Vander Plaat Funeral Home I would like to extend our deepest sympathy in the loss of your husband and father Bart. I can remember how Bart would come to the Funeral Home to sell adds for the New Jersey Choral Society and we would sit and chat. Thank you for the confidence you have placed in myself and staff. Please keep in touch and allow us to help you in any way. Sincerely, Bill Brock

My first remembrance of Bart was when I was a teenager and he would call for a date with Jean. I would answer the phone and pretend I was Jean and lead him along. It would take him a short while before he would catch on. It was fun for me, but probably not for him. When Bart sang in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood, I was very proud of his voice and his being chosen to sing solos. I was a member of the Jr. Choir at that time and eventually became a member of the Sr. Choir while Bart and Jean were yet members of that church. He was my first "In-Law" and was always very special to me. I enjoyed several years of wonderful family time with his presence and often baby sat with their children, Don and Nancy. When I married we moved out of the area and so had less time to share. However our visits were treasured when we did get together in New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and California. I have many family pictures taken by Bart of special holidays and gatherings and treasure them as momentos of our get togethers. Bart did special photos of me that I used in my early job interviews. Bart and Jean set a fine example of married life and one we wanted to emulate. Over 61 years Bart had always been a caring, loving husband, father, brother-in-law and friend. I will always remember our times together. Mrs. Margaret Stratton Barrie

I just heard of Bart's passing from a fellow chorister in NJCS (Virginia Lincoln). My heart goes out to Jean and Nancy and family. You were all very kind and welcoming to Gayle and me when we had first moved here from Atlanta. We wish you God's grace and comfort especially now. Bart was a VERY kind and encouraging mentor for me when I was singing with him at Grace United Methodist Church Bart even encouraged me to audition for NJCS. Amazingly, I passed the audition and was thrilled to sing alongside Bart - though I could never quite match his deep, rich low notes. I've been at it now for about 13 years and love it. And I will never forget the kind and gentle man who first encouraged me! The world is a poorer place without Bart. I'm very sorry that I cannot attend the memorial service on Friday morning. I was so sorry to hear of Bart's passing. I sang with him for many years with the New Jersey Choral Society and always enjoyed his good humor and love of life, as well as his solid bass voice. He continued to attend concerts after retiring from NJCS, as well as giving us the joy of his daughter Nancy's involvement as a frequent usher for concerts. He will be missed.
