When I was first dating Gus, some people said his mother wouldn't accept me as I was not Italian. But they were wrong! Gramma Palladino said "I love Josephine, and she's not Italian." I always felt fortunate that you led the way for my entrance into the Palladino family, Jo.
My first acquaintenc with the Palladino family was at a dinner Jo and Joe had for me to meet my future inlaws. I remember feeling the warmth of the family and the wonderful display of foods on the table -- all provided by Jo and Joe. It was a nice beginning for me. That warm feeling was always there whenever I visited Jo's home.
Jo was a very caring mother. When her daughter, Mimi, went into the convent, her Uncle Gus was so upset, he refused to visit her. This bothered Mimi. Jo got a hold of Gus and said, "When you hurt one of my children, you hurt me". Gus and I quickly went to vist Mimi at the convent.
When my husband, Gus, would have to go out of town, I would stay with Jo and Joe -- and their four daughters (Bunchy had to give up her room and sleep with the twins). While there, I would play Scrabble with Jo and Joe, and I learned how ruthless Jo could be at the game. She got the best of me everytime. I wanted to play for fun, but she was always there to win -- and she always did win.
I remember the day Gus and I visited their home, and Jo was showing off her new Corelle dishes. She said, "They are unbreakable". She then proceeded to take a pile of about ten dishes in her hands, and she slammed them to the floor. Lo and behold, the dishes smashed to bits. We all laughed. When she complained to the shopkeeper, he told her he didn't expect to have a pile of ten slammed to the floor.
Jo was into ceramics, and she gave me a teapot she made. I used it for many years when my children were young. Now my daughter, Mimi, has it. She says it's part of her heritage.
Then, there's her pork roast. She taught me to make this dish, with the garlic, onions, and honey. My family consider it one of our favorite dishes. We call it Aunt Jo's Pork Roast.
God bless you, Jo, for always being so kind to me (except for the Scrabble), and I consider myself very lucky to have had you in my life.
With sincerity and love, Dolores Palladino
