Andy and I carpooled to IBM quite a bit during the summer of 1982. I learned a great deal from him and enjoyed his company very much. Not sure how great it could have been for him, being stuck in a car with a dumb, opinionated 21-year old kid, but he was very kind, patient, and humorous, hearing my interminable complaints about asphalt and corporations. When I told him I was an English major, he asked me “what are you going to do with your degree, move into the woods and read poetry to the bears?” Good question! Actually I became a computer programmer. And that summer the long talks I had with Andy about the world helped shape my view of it later on. I learned of his passing when I looked him up on line to see if he was still in Ho-Ho-Kus, thought I’d drop him a line and try to reconnect. My condolences to the friends and family of this fine man.
