Obituary of Bernard Berninger
Berninger, Bernard H., age 96 of Midland Park, died on Saturday, November 10, 2018. Born in Quakertown, PA Bernie grew up in Midland Park where he was a graduate of Pompton Lakes High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served as a radioman on the Heavy Cruiser, USS San Francisco. He went on to serve for the duration of World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
He worked for Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Corp. in Wood-Ridge for 44 years where he met his wife Elsie. Bernie and Elsie were married in 1943 and moved to Midland Park where they raised their family. After his retirement, he was employed by the Allendale Police Department as a crossing guard for 24 years.
Surviving are his devoted children, Fred and his wife Bridget of Saddle Brook, Mark and his wife Carol of Midland Park and Janis and her husband Gordon Oeschger of Chester Springs, PA. Bernie also leaves his 12 adoring grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Bernie was predeceased by his loving wife of 74 years, Elsie in 2017.
Funeral services for Bernie will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in Bernie’s name to the Midland Park Ambulance Corps, 471 Godwin Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Arrangements by the Vander Plaat Funeral Home of Wyckoff (www.vpfh.com).
