Obituary of Eileen Ellis

Ellis, Eileen (Roeser) age 96, passed away peacefully with her children and family by her side on Sunday, October 04, 2015. Eileen was born in New York, NY, the oldest of seven children. Eileen is pre deceased by a son Bernard Joseph Ellis, Jr. who died in 1987, her brothers and sisters except her youngest sister, Katherine (Roeser) Knight, who resides in Australia. Eileen graduated from Holy Name School of Nursing in 1942 and served as a US Army Nurse on the hospital ship Wisteria in WWII, making fourteen trips across the Atlantic bringing the wounded back from Europe. Eileen was married to Mr. Bernard Joseph Ellis Sr. for 60 years and a resident of Ridgewood, NJ from 1963 until the time of Bernard’s passing in 2009. Since then Eileen was a resident at Van Dyk Park Place in Hawthorne, NJ. In Ridgewood, Eileen was a nurse at Valley Hospital and continued after retirement as a volunteer. As a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church since 1963, Eileen was also a member of the Mt. Carmel Rosary Society. Eileen was the mother of eight children, six girls: Mary Ann Katz, her husband Fred, Elizabeth Ann Meyer, her husband Doug, Melissa Joan Stedman, Loretta Jeanne McCarthy, her husband Terry, Rosemary Gatti, her husband Paul, Julie Marie Kooy, her husband Bertus, and a son John Andrew Ellis, his wife Holly, eighteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 4PM to 7PM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 10AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 52 Passaic St., Ridgewood. The interment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah.
