Thomas McEneny

Obituary of Thomas McEneny

McEneny, Thomas Farrell, age 57, of Ringwood, NJ died Sunday, May 22, 2011. Born in New York City, he was raised in Pelham Manor and moved to Ringwood 28 years ago. Tom was most recently an Editor for 60 Minutes and was with CBS Broadcasting Co. in New York City for 35 years. He spent most of his career editing at the CBS Evening News where he became a star performer, often the editor chosen for important, breaking stories. He joined 60 Minutes just a few months ago. Tom was a newsman with a knack for storytelling. He helped every reporter and producer make stories great. Tom ('Mac') joined CBS News in the message center in 1976, after graduating from Curry College in Massachusetts. He began delivering packages, but saw the opportunity to move up to the Video Archive Department, where he watched and learned enough to become a self taught video editor - sharp enough to be hired in the edit pool. Then a stint in Weekend News led to the CBS Evening News editor's job, one he excelled at, that took him to faraway places like Dubai, Moscow, Malta and Tokyo and to domestic events like political conventions, presidential campaigns and America's Cup in Newport to edit on scene. He also worked on segments for Sunday Morning, as well as editing pieces for 48 Hours, where his work helped win two Emmy awards, for "America's Mission" in 1995 and "The Citadel" in 1996. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. Mac was an avid golfer who belonged to Bowling Green Golf Club, where he had a hole-in-one last year. Surviving is his wife of 29 years, Susan (nee Hohman) McEneny of Ringwood, his sons, Thomas A. of Philadelphia, PA and Brian R. of Wall Township, NJ. Also surviving is his brother, Timothy S. and his wife Laurene, his nephew, Timothy S. Jr. and his wife Eileen, his niece Erika, and his great nephew, Timothy S. III. He was predeceased by his brother, Philip in 1986 and his parents, Philip and Isabel McEneny. Visiting is on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday 12 noon at Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect St., Midland Park, NJ 07432. Private Cremation will be held.
