I met "Swifty" in our beach house at 5 Chicago in Sea Girt about 6 years ago. He was one of the funniest people I had ever met. He used to hang out in our yard listening to Johnny Cash and Elvis, having a great old time, even if he was by himself. I am so sad that he fought so hard for so long, but I am happy that he is now with God. I can picture him up there in heaven jammin with Johnny Cash and Elvis. Rest in Peace Swifty, you were always one of the good ones. Love, JP

To Mike's family, our sincere condolences on your deep loss. I didn't know Mike very well, but our short friendship was meaningful and fun. He was always positive in his spirit and kept a smile on his face, never allowing himself to be the victim of his illness. As I told Richard Clark, he will always be remembered by us at Shleppers, as he helped write our wonderful company brochure, so he's always with us. We wish you comfort at this very difficult time and continued strength as the days pass. Sincerely, Louisa Bohm and the Shleppers Staff

Dear Swift family, Our hearts break in the passing of Mike or as we have always called him, Swifty. We did beach houses with him and have such great memories from the past several summers. Even when he was sick, he had such a positive attitude that it was inspiring to all. He entertained us on many occasions through his creative wit, his nice singing voice and his hearty laugh. He passed too soon but we're grateful he is no longer in pain and has found eternal peace. He will live on in our stories and memories for many years to come. May God Bless you and keep you. May his face shine upon you and give you peace. Kristi and Larry Gerstel.

I had the great honor of spending 4 years at Penn with Swifty. He was a unique person - someone that always made a big impact on those around him. He amazed me with his love of life, always seeing the positive and bringing laughter to all. He was a rare breed with a great intellect and interesting perspective on life. I remember living in the fraternity where he had the most interesting study habits. If he needed to do a paper on Thomas Jefferson, he would dress up as Thomas Jefferson in full regalia and work throughout the night to complete his work. He approached all things with great passion, whether it be digging a trench for a south of the border party, managing the kitchen staff, telling stories and laughing, going on road trips or finding (lord knows where) a massive pile of logs and creating a bonfire in the woods (the rest of us only found twigs). I haven't had the opportunity to spend much time with Swifty since school but I am very saddened to hear of his passing. I will miss my friend and my heart goes out to his family. tim

I met Mike "Swifty" at the NJ Shore. I remember his love of good music and he liked to run the boardwalk. I always looked for him when I would go to the parties around Sea Girt. I'm sad to say that I wont be seeing his smile and cheerful attitude anymore. My prayers go out to the Swift family. Bill McGrath

Like other FLOW area classmates who have expressed condolences on this site, many of my memories relate to the Vermont ski trips or playing various sports with Swifty. Having gone to school in the Philadelphia area, I also enjoyed several rides home from college with Mike during our Freshman year. It didn't really matter what we were doing or how long it had been since we last connected, I always found Swifty to be the unique person who could make me feel truly comfortable yet profoundly challenged. Being around Mike was always an adventure, and I mean that in the best possible way. I will always be inspired by the way Swifty could meet every challenge with a calm and reassured outlook, accomplishing so much in the 25+ years that I have known him. Every second with Swifty was treasured and will not be forgotten.

The last time I saw Swifty was at Eco's 40th birthday party. For some reason we got on the subject of Greg Schiano, the head football coach at Rutgers and the captain of our high school football team when we won the state championship our junior year. Swifty regaled us with a fun story about Greg from that season; after one of our weekly "theory" sessions we had on Friday nights before Saturday games, Mike decided to swing by his girlfriend's house for a quick "pit-stop". after pulling into his girl friend's driveway Mike sees another car pulling up behind him. Mike gets out of his car but he still can't see who is driving the other car because the high beams are on. who should get out of the car but Greg Schiano wagging his finger and telling Mike that he needed to get his head screwed on straight for the game tomorrow and that meant getting himself back home and early to bed for a good night's sleep. I can still hear Swiftie's belly laugh as he recounted the details of the punch line to the story. what i remember about Swifty is the abundance of energy and intelligence and humor -- and that big smile of his -- that he always seemed to carry around with him; i am grateful to have experienced Mike's unique spirit as a teammate and friend and fellow member of the very distinguished cleanup crew for Aneiro/Crevani construction the summer of 1987-8. god bless Swifty.

My deepest sympathies to Mike's family. I was fortunate enough to meet Swifty in Manasquan. His positive attitude and uncanny wit would brighten up weekends for all of us down the shore. Whether it was a rendition of Elvis and Johnny Cash or a casual conversation, he left everyone he touched with cherished memories we will never forget.

Laraine, Renny and Brian,
We were blessed to spend time with Michael at Brad's 40th birthday gathering. He was positive and upbeat despite his trials. He had clearly grown to be the man every parent hopes to have.
We suffer his loss with you, but will always carry with us the wonderful memories of his life in Wyckoff. Jo & Don van Siclen

I remember skiing, first of many, using the A Frame as home base. We were at Bromley, the "sunny mountain" and I'm halfway down the top run, and I look up top, and see some guy in knickers with a tweed cap, and I believe a vest, and I'm thinking to myself 'who's this geezer' and then he starts shredding the fall line, and I think Hags was next to me, and I poke him and say 'man that geezer can ski' and as he shreds past us, it's ffin Swifty. god bless mike. jim

From the first time Michael smiled at me I knew he was going to be someone special in my life. Every single little quirk about him tickled and intrigued me. He was so handsome, charming, intelligent, sweet, genuine, and hilarious…dang Michael was funny…I’m incredibly blessed to have had him in my life and in my heart. I will miss him dearly. I believe from my core that he finally knows true joy. Renny and Lorraine…I’m so sorry I know how much you both loved him. Brian you too man…you are “Super Brother”…he loved you all SOOOooo very much. More than words can ever say. Thank you for giving him life – for he enriched mine. He once used this reference on me…so now I return the sentiment, “You ask me if I'll find another. I don't know. I can't say. I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.” (Johnny Cash) I love you Michael - see you at the gate baby!! =)

Mike is one of the funniest and smartest people I know. He always had a quick reply to a joke, and it usually had a deep, intelligent reference buried in it too. Our strongest bond was being the look team inside linebackers in football practice- he called us "the numb boys"- my neck was constantly hurting and he would try to get numb with laughter etc. A year or so ago when we were coming out of Eco's surprise 40th birthday party he looked at me and said "do you remember the big red balloon?" I said "sure, that movie from about 3rd grade, right?" Mike smiled. For those who never saw the movie, a red helium balloon bounces around for a while and at the end floats off to the heavens. I'm sure Mike is in heaven now, and I know how much we are all going to miss him. Take care Swiftie!

Dear Stuncle Mike: I am writing you this letter in heaven to let you know that even though you are not physically here, I know that you will look over all of us and will watch me grow up to be big and strong. Mommy said you were very smart so hopefully you will look after me when I have to start studying. "Bubby" told me what a great athlete you were so hopefully you will send me down some of your football skills. Most of all though I am told that you were gentle, tender, sensitive, caring and quite simply a wonderful person. So "Stuncle Mike," as much as I hope you watch over me to make sure I am smart and athletic, most of all I hope to receive those other much more important qualities that will make me be a stand out human being as you were. I will make you proud as you made everyone around you proud. I will point up to the sky after my first touchdown to make sure you saw it so be on the look out. xo Mikey

We cannot change this event that my mind continues to reject. It is quickly replaced with a picture of his smile, which always makes me smile. Mike's complex nature moved us. His creations were fast and funny, not mean or obscure. He always had an answer to, "Hey, Mike what are you reading". Before he ever had the title, he was our creative director whose crisp messages were cleaned for our consumption. He fed our souls in effortless fashion, as only the best can make world-class look easy. He showed us how to let go of daily pressures and materialism and replace them with enjoying the moment. A true gift indeed.

I'm so incredibly sorry. Swifty was a big part of my life at the beach and he will always be remembered. His sense of humor always put a smile on my face. He's what I like to call "good people". This is my first Swifty memory: It's day one of the first 5 Chicago beach house we did together. He generously says, "I'm going to the liqour store, does anyone need anything?". The crowd replies, "yeah man, can you pick up a case of beer and perhaps some vodka. Don't forget limes!" "Bottle of rum", another person yells out and 20 dollar bills are being thrown at him. "Sure, sure", he replies. 25 minutes later, here comes Swifty with all of the alcohol in hand. What he did not tell us was that he did not have a car. (even though there were 15 cars in the driveway) Somehow, he managed to bring us all of the spirits while riding his bike with a big grin on his face!!
