Sometimes a special day means more years later. Here is one of my favorites. Jeanette and I were little girls, maybe 6 and 8 years old. On our way to school we passed Grandma and Grandpa's house and they waved us over. We could see they were putting up the Christmas tree and decorating the house for Christmas. We suddenly became "sick" and couldn't make it to school. Not two minutes later we were at the kitchen table eating raisin bread toast and having sweet tea! Christmas music was playing on the old stereo and we were dancing and singing holiday songs as we decorated! The best sick day ever!
All the grandchildren will agree about how special they made us feel and how very very special they both were to us. Here are some memories I know we all remember - Sunday dinners we could smell as we walked up the front steps, water balloons in the yard, grandma washing and setting the older ladys' hair then powdering them up, "Ask Grandpa to take us for ice cream!", watching Lawrence Welk and Merv Griffin, going to Saturday mass, walks up to Main St., Jolly Jake's, Grandma throwing Patreece's Tippy dog in the air with her feet, dressing up on Halloween and all of the cousins always together, sitting on the porch listening to Met games and eating peaches. It couldn't have been better.
Years passed and Grandpa got sick. Some nights when we got home from the hospital we were quiet and she would ask me to read my book aloud. So I did until we fell asleep. The next morning she would say,"You're a good girl Sue Sue.". And my hand to God she had packed me a lunch to take to work that was so big she put it grocery bag!!
Then the morning came when Grandpa passed. Her Charlie was gone and she missed him everyday. Luckily for Grandma she had two more granddaughters who would also be special to her and they came into her life exactly when she needed them. Over the years she would get grandchildren-inlaws and they all loved her. Eric got a kick out of her and loved her as his own grandmother. And tell me girls...wasn't she a flirt with our husbands! :)Then came the great grandchildren. She loved every one of them. Lucky for us they were all born in time to have known her. What a blessing for our family.
Grandma was lucky to have her last days at home where she was loved and taken care of. Now our Grandmother is gone. Her last moments in our world were in the quiet of night and in my heart I know that Grandpa came to her side and gently lifted her into his arms and said "I'm here Ann. Let me show you Heaven." And there they went. Ann and Charlie...together again.

Dear Patti and Girls, I just wanted to let you all know how sorry I was to hear about your loss! I know how much it can hurt and how difficult the days ahead will seem. It has only been a year since my Mom has passed but a day doesn't go by that I don't think of her. The tears are replaced now sometimes with laughter as we remember all the fun times we shared together and you'll see it will get easier. It is so hard in the beginning and the hurt is so deep. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all and will be with you especially over the next few days. If you need to talk please call. My love to all!! Maryann

There is one photo that I have of my Auntie Ann. I'm not sure where it is right now or I would have included it with this memory. I've never forgotten it though. It was taken years and years ago in my Grandmother's (Ann's Mom) living room. The photo was of Auntie Ann all dressed up in a pretty dress and heals. She must have been preparing to go somewhere special. On her head was a man's very large football helmet. She was posing for the camera. I think all her life she had a wonderful sense of humor. I too, remember my youth spent at her home with my cousins. Memories that I will always cherish. My vision of her now...is that there is one huge embrace going on in Heaven....Peter, Agnes, George, Johnny, May, Aggie, Dorothy and Ann. May your eternity be filled with the comfort and joy of being with each other and the Lord. I love you all.

I'm so saddened to know that this world has lost a woman filled with such sweetness and laughter. I have so many memories of my Aunt Ann and the house on Cleveland Street. I am so blessed to know that I came from the lines of this family....a family filled with such joy. My memories stem from those Sundays at Grandma's house...where the family would gather, cousins would be in and out......sitting on the porch......running between Ann's and Aggie's house over and over again. The memories are still vivid all of these years later. I thank you, Auntie Ann, for being a part of those in my childhood that gave me such a sense of security and belonging...the last of the generation to which all of those stories were attached that my mom told me as a child. I used to say to my mom, "tell me a story about when you were young..." Her stories were filled with antics of her brothers and sisters growing up in a time when money was scarce but they always made the best of it. Laughter was the "constant" in their lives. I'll treasure your memory and that of all of my mom's siblings. Have a wonderful reunion with each of them....I know they've missed you.

If you scroll through the pictures above, you will see several of Grandma (and Grandma and me) making ridiculous faces at each other. I don't remember when it started, but it has been this way for a very long time. While most Grandmas would encourage you to smile pretty or be polite and that such nonsense, mine was not happy unless I was making the ugliest possible face so that she could laugh and then give it right back at me. Then, she discovered the iPhone. Now, Grandma had absolutely no idea how to use it but she thought it was, "A really good camera." She had me take video after video, picture after picture. I would always ask her to smile pretty, and she would nearly always make a face. She loved to stick out her tongue. She particularly enjoyed when I folded my lower lip down and then made like a biting motion with it. So, no, Grandma (and me) are proof that your face will NOT freeze that way.
