Obituary of J. William Van Dyke
VAN DYKE, J. William "Bill", age 76 of Midland Park, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 27th, 2013. Bill was a lifelong resident of Midland Park, NJ and a summer resident at Green Pond, where he spent many wonderful summers with his family. Bill and his loving wife Judy (nee Van Lenten) were married on August 23, 1958, and recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Faith Community Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff, and a prior member of the Irving Park Christian Reformed Church in Midland Park where he served in several church offices.
Bill was Owner and President of Radiation Systems, Inc. in Wyckoff for 29 years before his retirement in 2001. He had a passion for serving others, and did so by serving his community through the following capacities: President of the Midland Park Board of Health, President of the North West Bergen Regional Health Commission, Member of the Board of Directors for the Cerebral Palsy Center of Bergen County, Midland Park Library Board of Trustees, and is a life member of the Midland Park Ambulance Corp. He also served as Chairman of the Veterans Memorial Plaza Restoration Committee of Midland Park.
Bill was also actively involved in politics and served in the following capacities: Councilman and Mayor of Midland Park, Bergen County Freeholder, North Jersey Transportation Authority in Newark, Bergen County Planning Board, Chairman of the Bergen County Highway Safety Advisory Committee, Board Member of Bergen Pines Hospital, Member of the Executive Committee of the Bergen County Work Force Advisement Board, Chairman of the Highway Safety Advisory Committee, Midland Park County Committee, and Chairman of the Midland Park Republican Club.
Bill had a love for music and enjoyed singing. He was a member of the "Ramapo Ramblers" bluegrass band for many years, and more recently sang with the "Men of Faith" christian singing ensemble. His other hobbies included playing the guitar, golf, fishing and model trains.
He is survived by his committed wife Judy, his children John William "Bill" (Sharon) Van Dyke, Jr. of Franklin Lakes, NJ, Debra (Gary) Post of Newton, NJ, Laurie Jongsma of Fremont, NH, and Nancy (Daniel) Brennan of Midland Park, NJ, his grandchildren Justin, Ashley, Keith, Courtney, Steven, Michelle, Danielle, and Jack. He is also survived by his siblings Jacob Van Dyke of Hawthorne, NJ and Jane Schoonejongen of Essex Junction, VT., and His father's second wife Helen Van Dyke. Bill was pre-deceased by his son-in-law Steve Jongsma in 2010.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Faith Community CRC, 530 Sicomac Ave., Wyckoff, NJ. The Van Dyke family will receive family and friends at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home(www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, NJ on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Christian School Association, 50 Oakwood Avenue, North Haledon, NJ, 07508 or the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
