Obituary of Derk Stavinga

STAVINGA, Derk age 87 of Wyckoff formerly of Hawthorne went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 30, 2013. Born in Uithuizen, the Netherlands, Derk came to the United States in 1954 settling with his family in Prospect Park. Derk owned and operated the Sharp Shop in Midland Park with his brother-in-law John Valkema for 25 years before his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Tena (nee Kersaan), his devoted children, Jacob Derk Stavinga and his wife Jan, Trudi and her husband Henry Churco and Marian and her husband Tim Trossman. Derk also leaves his 10 adoring grandchildren, Brian, Kristen, Daniel, Timothy, Richard, Melanie, Nicole, Kevin, John and Matthew, 5 great grandchildren, Kylen, Samantha, Conner, Abigail and Lillian, and his sisters Tillie Meinders and Wieke Van der Ploeg both in the Netherlands. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, 11:30 AM at the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church, 422 Cedar Hill Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Visiting is Monday, 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff. Interment will be private in the Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Christian School Association, 50 Oakwood Avenue, North Haledon, NJ 07508.
