Obituary of Vincent M. Tobin

Vincent M. Tobin (age 85) died on June 15, 2020. He was married 63 incredible years to Jean M. Tobin who passed away on March 27, 2020. He is survived by his sister Eileen (Toots) Mashikian (Jack), daughters: Rosemarie Tobin (Morey Vrooman), Pat Sargent (Jerry) and Debra FitzPatrick, his son Vincent Tobin and his beloved grandchildren, Jerry IV, Joe and Matt Sargent, and Tess and Bill FitzPatrick as well as extended family both in the States and in Ireland with whom he fostered special and unique relationships. The youngest of three, he was born in Tarrytown, NY to Kathleen d.1987 and Martin Joseph Tobin d. 1942. In addition to his sister Eileen Vince had a brother, Martin who passed away in 2015. He graduated from Irvington High School and from Fordham University in 1955 with a BS in Mathematics. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Arkansas where he and Jean started their family. Vince joined George B. Buck Consultants as an actuary in the mid 60's. He became a Group Executive and Director of Buck Consultants, Inc., was a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a fellow of the Conference of Actuaries in Public Practice. During his tenure he was the lead consultant on Bucks most prestigious fortune 500 clients. He was a natural mentor and helped develop many of their younger leading consultants. He was instrumental in establishing the company as a corporation seeing it through the transition from private ownership to closely held corporation and continued to serve on the board until his retirement in 1999. During his retirement, Vince and Jean traveled to Ireland, England France, Italy, Australia and New Zealand, and spent time in Long Beach Island. One of Vince’s passions was being a volunteer teacher at St. Patrick’s/Assumption School in Jersey City, NJ where he taught Algebra and Geometry to middle school students for several years. He was also a volunteer for the Soup Kitchen Ministry at Church of the Presentation, preparing and delivering meals to guests in Newark and Harlem. Vince loved gathering and hosting family and friends for memorable parties and celebrations, especially at Christmas and on July 4th. He was a NJ Devils fan and avid golfer. He often went to Devils games and played golf with his son Vinny, which created a very special bond between them. Vince also enjoyed running and finished several New York Marathons. We wish to extend our gratitude to Helena and Jiri for their exceptional care of Vince over these last few years. Visitation will be at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff on Thursday, June 18, 2020 from 3:00 -6:00. A funeral mass/memorial mass for Vince and Jean will be held on Friday, June 18, 2020 at 10:00 at Church of the Presentation, 271 W. Saddle River Rd, Upper Saddle River, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vince's memory may be made to the Valley Hospital Foundation, Valley Hospice, 223 North Van Dien, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
