Obituary of Phyllis D. Bryce
Phyllis Doreen Bryce, 93, formerly of Palm Harbor, Florida, passed away on Thursday, October 24th 2019. Born the fifth of six siblings and raised in Georgetown, Guyana, South America; Phyllis served in the British-Guiana National Military before immigrating to the United States at the age of 21. She took up residency in Harlem, New York, where she met and soon married Curtis Bryce, her husband of almost 70 years. Shortly after her marriage, she moved to Brooklyn where she lived for over 50 years, raising her four sons, completing her education, and caring for her extended family. Phyllis received a Bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College and her Master’s Degree cum laude from New York University. During her professional career she became a teacher, an early childhood educator, eventually becoming the Director of the Brooklyn YMCA Montessori Early Childhood Program. Phyllis dedicated her life to the underserved children in her community, helping them embrace a better future through education, enlightenment, and life skills. She is survived by her four sons, Sherman Bryce, David Bryce, Jeffrey Bryce and Dwayne Bryce; her younger sister, Sheila Deane and her many loving grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ruby Ann and Cuthbert as well as her late husband Curtis E. Bryce (2017). Receiving of friends and family will be held at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, (vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, New Jersey, on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Donations in Phyllis’ memory can be made to www.oasisnj.org in the name of Phyllis D.
