Knew him in Tucson, I'm the guy he went to Mexico with, where he had a terrible truck accident. Sorry for your loss.

Belated condolences to the Gerber family. As a sophomore in 1973 I was lucky to have watched on of the best high school athletes ever. Howie was a role model for me and my teammates. As an athlete I will always remember his focus and determination. He left a lasting impression on the entire Riverdell high school family.
Sincerely,
Frank Florio Varsity Basketball And Baseball 1975

I remember that it didn't matter to Howie whether you played men's or women's sports; if you were in the math, shop or home ec clubs; or if you were on a 'half-time' squad or in the marching band. Everyone was on a level playing field with him - which was a great testament to him as a man, to me more noteworthy than his athletic awards.
Condolences and hugs to Linda and to her and Howie's families, and to others whose lives Howie brightened over his lifetime.

So sorry to hear about Howie's passing. Not only was he one of River Dell's all-time greatest athletes, but he was a wonderful, giving person. I'll never forget one of my first dates with my HS girlfriend...I didn't have a driver's license yet, so Howie drove us to the movies, and then PICKED US UP after the movie. Really a wonderful guy with a heart of gold. Please accept my condolences.

With a very heavy heart I send my warmest condolences to Howie's family. He was a wonderful and close friend,
One of my favorite River Dell Golden Hawks was THE HAWK. There are many great memories with the Hawk. One vivid memory is, of course, a football one, because Howie was simply one of the best we ever saw at River Dell. I can still clearly see him streaking down the sidelines in the Indian Hills game our senior year at home for an 80 yard touchdown that turned the momentum of the game in our favor and led to the biggest win of the year in our championship season. But the memory I'll be most fond of is Howie picking me up at my house in Oradell on his Harley ( I thought my Mom was going to have a heart attack, but it was Howie so she was ok ) and taking me into the City on July 4th to watch the fireworks. He just couldn't help himself and needed to show me on the way that his Harley could go over 100 miles an hour!
Rest in piece Hawk, We will miss you. Love Artie

I was extremely saddened to hear the passing of Howard. He was a tremendous athlete and even a better human being. We played a lot of hoops together and I was fortunate enough to be his teammate on River Dells basketball team in 1973. Probably the fondest memory I have is when we both went to Willis Reed‘s basketball camp together. We had a tremendous time. My sincerest condolences go out to the Gerber family. R. I. P. Herbie

My deepest condolences. I have great memories of Howie, especially from our years together on the football team. I was the athletic trainer and taped Howie's ankles for all the games. What a great friend and athlete, and always so humble about his great talents. He was truly the "Golden Hawk".

My deepest condolences. Howie was a very nice person, a humble yet great athlete. I was a lowly freshman and later a sophomore when he was a top ranked River Dell receiver. He was always a quiet and friendly guy, who never looked down on anyone. A real pleasure to know. So sorry for your loss

I’m grateful for having the pleasure to know Howie as a River Dell classmate. It was always comforting knowing I was on his team and not playing against him - he was a tremendous athlete. More importantly, he was a genuine person and caring individual. My prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

I was very saddened to hear of Howies passing. We had played basketball together beginning our freshman year and continuing through our senior year. We shared a lot of memories and lots of good times. Howie was a phenomenal athlete but was even a better person. Unfortunately we had lost touch through the years, but I have nothing but good memories of him and all the time we spent together.
May God bless him and his family, and may he rest in peace

Linda, I am so saddened hear about Howie's passing. When we spoke a few weeks ago, he sounded much better. We all know what a great athlete he was. However, he was even a better, and one of the most humble people I ever knew. Howie was a special friend with a terrific sense of humor. We spent countless hours playing ball and hanging out together going all the way back to Oradell elementary though our River Dell years. I will miss him. May he RIP.
