Yvonne,
Our hearts go out to you, Suzy, and the kids. We enjoyed spending time with Kaloust last year when he welcomed us into his home. Just in the time that we were there, you could see what a warm and beautiful person he was!

I have known Kal and Susan for 35 years. Kal was truely a man for all seasons. He epitomizes everything we should all aspire to in life. A true gentleman who exhibited kindness understanding integrity and gave to life and all those around him all these aspects that made all of us better human beings. Extraordinary is an understatement when I think of Kal. It was a privilege for me to be a part of his life for he made me a better man I Will sorely miss him but like all of us he will remain in my heart forever. Greatness is not judged bypublic accolades but by our contributions to life everyday. And by this standard Kal set himself way above everyone else he was a man to not only admire but to also emulate. Charles Dickens in the novel A Tale Of Two Cities. Wrote. ‘Tis a far better thing I do today than I have ever done before and Tis a far better place I go to than I have known before. Kal I hope to see you again with that infectious smile in heaven.

Suzy, I am so saddened by Kal’s passing. He was a fantastic guy, and I always enjoyed my time with him. He was an incredibly generous person, and the treated people with great respect. He was also a gracious landlord to my daughter and her friends. He very kindly took the heat, and paid a fine, for a late night party at her Georgetown townhouse that disturbed the neighbors! He understood that was part of renting to kids and he didn’t want to get them in trouble. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

On The Death Of The Beloved - Poem by John O'Donohue
Though we need to weep your loss,
You dwell in that safe place in our hearts,
Where no storm or night or pain can reach you.
Your love was like the dawn
Brightening over our lives
Awakening beneath the dark
A further adventure of colour.
The sound of your voice
Found for us
A new music
That brightened everything.
Whatever you enfolded in your gaze
Quickened in the joy of its being;
You placed smiles like flowers
On the altar of the heart.
Your mind always sparkled
With wonder at things.
Though your days here were brief,
Your spirit was live, awake, complete.
We look towards each other no longer
From the old distance of our names;
Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath,
As close to us as we are to ourselves.
Though we cannot see you with outward eyes,
We know our soul's gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything
To which we bring our best refinement.
Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.
When orchids brighten the earth,
Darkest winter has turned to spring;
May this dark grief flower with hope
In every heart that loves you.
May you continue to inspire us:
To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again.

Below is a poem I'd like to share which gave me some comfort in in my times of loss:
The Layers
BY STANLEY KUNITZ
I have walked through many lives,
some of them my own,
and I am not who I was,
though some principle of being
abides, from which I struggle
not to stray.
When I look behind,
as I am compelled to look
before I can gather strength
to proceed on my journey,
I see the milestones dwindling
toward the horizon
and the slow fires trailing
from the abandoned camp-sites,
over which scavenger angels
wheel on heavy wings.
Oh, I have made myself a tribe
out of my true affections,
and my tribe is scattered!
How shall the heart be reconciled
to its feast of losses?
In a rising wind
the manic dust of my friends,
those who fell along the way,
bitterly stings my face.
Yet I turn, I turn,
exulting somewhat,
with my will intact to go
wherever I need to go,
and every stone on the road
precious to me.
In my darkest night,
when the moon was covered
and I roamed through wreckage,
a nimbus-clouded voice
directed me:
“Live in the layers,
not on the litter.”
Though I lack the art
to decipher it,
no doubt the next chapter
in my book of transformations
is already written.
I am not done with my changes.
