My late mother, Sarah Howell, began working as a domestic for Bill & Ethel Grant when they lived in Paterson. When they relocated to Wyckoff, they asked her to continue with them. While in high school, during breaks, I would go with my mother to rake leaves and earn pocket money. It was during spring break of my senior year while working, Dr. Grant asked me what were my plans after high school. Being 16 years old I told her I was thinking about college but knowing that my finances were limited, because my father died when I was in 7th grade, and my mother was the main source of income for caring for 5 children I would probably look for a job. Dr. Grant made a phone call and arranged for me to take the College Entrance Exam. After a follow-up interview, I was accepted at Paterson State College. She would see me on campus periodically. During my senior year I had a work study job and was assigned to be her student assistant as well as my instructor for Teaching Reading.. She was always courteous and encouraging.
Now, as a retired school administrator with 3 college degrees, I have always been thankful to God for allowing me to be in her presence on the day that she made that phone call. I will be forever grateful. Thank you Dr. Grant.
