Martin Noble

Obituary of Martin Noble

Marty Noble of Waldwick died suddenly on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at age 70.  He was born to Walter and June Noble in Bronx, New York, where his earliest memories were of Yankee Stadium.  At age 10 he moved to Waldwick, NJ and was a member of Waldwick High School’s first graduating class in 1966.  In High School he starred in basketball, edited the school newspaper and met the love of his life, Yvette Noble. He then went on to study English at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where his love for journalism flourished.

He went on to marry Yvette on the hottest day of August, 1969.  Marty began his career covering high school sports for the Passaic Herald and the Bergen Record, transitioning to Major League Baseball where he would write for the rest of his heralded career with New York Newsday and finally, MLB.com. as both the New York Mets beat writer and covering general baseball stories.

A devoted family man, Marty is survived by his loving wife Yvette of nearly 50 years, his daughter Carolyn Mylowe (husband Nick), to whom he gave his temper, and his daughter Lindsay, to whom he imparted his writing abilities. His four grandchildren were the light of his life. He loved sharing baseball stories with Harrison, eating his favorite salt sticks with Berkeley, tickling Adelaide and sharing leaf-blowing jobs with Bradley.  He is also survived by a sister, Lynn Johanson of Nampa, ID, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jeannine and John Haak and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Michelle and Jack Barnaba, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

A doo-wop aficionado, Marty’s greatest hero was Mickey Mantle, and in his spare time he enjoyed caring for his lawn, choosing the perfect landscaping rocks, madras, trips to HomeGoods, and driving 20 miles to find the cheapest gas. He was pretty sure there was never anyone as cool as Elvis. He despised tomatoes, the deer who ruined his yard and bad grammar. Outside of the ballpark, he could be found speaking on baseball in libraries, at dinners or in random parking lots to just about anyone who would listen.  Marty was also a gifted public speaker.

One of Marty’s life goals was to write a book entitled, “Table for Five.” He would ask Mets players, friends, and family for a list of 4 other people, living or deceased, with whom they would like to have dinner and why. For many people, Marty Noble would be on that list.  He lived his life unapologetically and with enthusiasm and will be deeply missed.

Services will be held at Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff, NJ.  Viewing will be held on Friday, 3/29 from 4-8pm. The funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, 3/30 at 11am.
