Uncle Joe, one week in the summer of 1977 you let me help Crenshaw the mason build the chimney on the house on Ridge Road. After we were done you told me that, no matter what else happens, I built that. You told me that I could always go and look at it if I ever felt that I hadn’t done much in life, whenever I felt down on myself. Well, a lot of years passed but in 1995 when I WAS down on my self, and life had hit me pretty hard, I actually did go there and look at that chimney and you were right: I built that and it still stands, straight and tall.
Well, you’ve built many things all around this part of the county and they still stand too, and the people you helped build, they are still standing too: me, Nick, Marcus, and Dominic, to name a few.
Rest In Peace, Uncle Joe. You gave me the pride of a job well done, a thing well made, and you taught me not to be afraid to knock something down and build it back again. I’ll see the works of your hands every day for the rest of my life, as short or as long as God makes it.
And then I’ll join you where all our trespasses are forgiven and all our griefs forgotten

Dear Uncle Joe; You joined us many times for your favorite, prime rib Christmas dinners at my home, and told us wonderful stories of your youth. One of my favorite memories is when Jim and I and Laura and Joe went to Paris one summer, and you met us and we walked all around the first day, and had a wonderful dinner at Le Train Bleu. We will miss you. May heaven welcome you with open arms

I don’t know what I’ll miss the most - Joe’s many stories or his texts that recalled his childhood friends, historical events and the people who shaped them, or his love of France.
What I’ll remember most is that Joe knew how to live life to the fullest. He was one of a kind and set a great example for all to follow. Rest In Peace, buddy boy. You are in my prayers.

Dear Joe and Rachel;
Judy and I are very sorry for the loss of your father, our "Uncle Joe". For us he was a unique and engaging individual and we will miss him. For me in particular, my Uncle Joe is in my earliest memories, of all sorts of events, times, activities, joys, and sorrows. We pray he is at peace, with the Lord, his loving wife, your Mom, and his parents, brother and cousins.
Know that he lives on in our minds.

My husband and I had dessert and coffee with Joe and his wonderful father when we all happened to be in Paris a few years ago. It was a cold, rainy afternoon, we met at a small restaurant in the Place des Vosges, and time flew as we talked and laughed. I can’t believe that his vibrant and original presence is something we will never experience again. Joe loved him as a friend as well as a father, something that is a great tribute to them both and to their love for each other over time and happy as well as tragic memories. My heart goes out to Joe. I hope that Joe will understand what he meant to his father and that this will be some tiny measure of comfort at this terrible time.
