Ken Vehrkens was a scholar, sportsman, educator and friend. With his guidance, many of us enjoyed our learning experience at Saturday College at EWC. As a Dean at EWC, Dean Vehrkens allowed us to grow and earn our AA degrees and for many, our BA degrees. He was a driving force that made Saturday College in the 1970's a great learning experience. He later was a able to assist my son to secure his degree at FDU. Being out of state, I am saddened to just now learn of his passing last year. My sincerest sympathy to his family. Robert W. Hecht, AA, BA, LL.B.

I had the pleasure of being a student at the Edward Williams College in the early '90s. Dean Vehrkens was one of the most personable administrators I have ever been around. An avid sportsman, he was a fixture in FDU's Intramurals program. I was honored once I graduated from EWC with an AA and soon a BA from Teaneck, I was playing hoops with the admins from EWC. I inspried to be like him in my secular work as a Teacher and coach. I had the pleasure of running into him at a FDU Basketball Game, which was my last time to engage with him. Dean Vehrkens gave EWC students his absolute best and warrented that in return. Im most appreciative of that. My most heartfelt condolences to his family!

Ken Vehrkens was a key advisor and valued innovator during my six years as FDU President. The then-Edward Williams College under Ken’s guidance, was the pathway to educational success for thousands of students. His cherished programs with the Giants brought added fame to FDU. I have only just now learned of his passing and add my words of appreciation for the devotion and stewardship of this educational pioneer.

My deepest condolences to the Vehrken's family. I first met the Dean in the 1980's when deciding to joint the then FDU Saturday college for adults. I went on to earn my MBA through FDU, at which time Dean Vehrkens offered me an adjunct professor job; and I have been teaching in that capacity ever since 1993. He was a wonderful man and a friend to all. I could not have expressed enough times that after he retired from FDU, he was missed and certainly the void of his no longer being at the helm was realized and had manifested itself in many ways. Now he will certainly be missed that much more in life.
Sincerely, Lisa Colon

I was very sorry to hear that Dean Vehrkens passed away. I worked for him in 1994-96 at Edward Williams College. Everything that was said about him in his obituary is very, very true. He was a gentlemen, leader, and a very hard worker. I will always remember him as a great man. It was a privilege to work for someone like him. I had a lot of good times in Edward Williams College and I know he will be truly missed. Again, I am truly sorry for your loss.

I have never met a person more intelligent or caring then the Dean. I had the pleasure of taking classes with him for 10 years (an adult program he started at my job). He made me so passionate about learning I looked forward to classes every day. He was the constant in my education and "coming of age" and one of the best role models anyone could choose. A little piece of my heart left when I got the news, but I am joyed to know that this is a life worth celebration.
