Obituary of Susan T. Winiarski

POMPTON PLAINS - Susan Troast Winiarski, 79, of Pompton Plains and Harvey Cedars, NJ, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at Cedar Crest Retirement Community. She was born on May 12, 1939, in Passaic, NJ, to William C. and Dorothy A. Troast, the youngest of three siblings. A graduate of Ridgewood High School (1957) and Connecticut College (1961), she worked as a toxicologist at Hoffman LaRoche in Nutley. Susan married Leo L. (Toby) Winiarski, Jr., on June 24, 1961. After living in Rutherford and Maywood, they moved to Ho-Ho-Kus where they raised three children. Susan was a passionate sports fan—an original “soccer mom”—and served the community in a wide range of leadership roles. She helped to establish the Ho-Ho-Kus Cooperative Nursery School, served as president of the Contemporary Club, played on the town tennis team, and worked on the executive committee of Boy Scout Troop 54. In later years, she volunteered at The Depot in Midland Park and served two terms as president. Susan loved all types of outdoor adventures, from cross-country camping trips to skiing vacations, but she felt most at home on Long Beach Island, where she spent summers sailing, swimming, and waterskiing in the company of her devoted family and close friends. Susan T. Winiarski is survived by her loving spouse Toby; brother David W. Troast of Deerfield, VA; sons Brian, Stephen, and Douglas; daughters-in-law Kerry Winiarski and Kira Przybylko; and grandchildren Kevin, Brynn, Christopher, Samuel, Grace, and Nathan. The family will host a memorial service at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Ho-Ho-Kus at 11:00 a.m. on February 9, 2019. Memorial contributions in Susan’s memory may be made to Children’s Aid and Family Services (https://cafsnj.ejoinme.org/donate-now) and Grace Healthcare Services (http://www.gracehcs.com/donation-program/).
