Obituary of LeRoy F. Meyer

OAKLAND – Roy Meyer passed away peacefully at home on September 15, 2018 at the age of 88. Born and raised in Union City, NJ, he graduated from Union Hill H.S. where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Hansen (2011) at age 16. They married in 1953 and moved to Oakland where they lived until 2008 when they moved to Wayne. Roy proudly served in U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He worked at General Foods Corp in White Plains, NY from 1950 -1987 and retired as an Advertising Executive. He was an active member of the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church since 1955. Roy was a musician, a magnificent pianist and choral director.  He loved arranging songs and directing his 20 voice vocal group, The Roy Meyer Swingers from 1967-2010.  Along with performing and raising money for Music Scholarships, they toured and performed in England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Switzerland, Romania.  Roy wrote music to the Gettysburg Address which was performed in Carnegie Hall in 1950.  He also directed the Wayne Valley Barbershop Chorus and the Ridgewood Barbershop Chorus in the 60’s.

 

He is predeceased by his wife Evelyn in 2011 and his sister Myrle Hussey in 2000. He is survived by three daughters: Elyn Bischof, Jan Martorelli and Dale Johnson, their husbands Joe Martorelli, Jonathan Bischof and Burr Johnson; grandchildren: Elayna and Tim Bramlette, Lili and Nick Martin,  Jamie Bischof, Ethan Johnson, Joseph and Emily Martorelli, Katharine and Jon Brodie and great grandsons and namesakes,  Clement Roy Martin and Henry Meyer Bramlette, sister-in- law, Marilyn Hams and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

 

Roy was deeply loved as husband, father, and grandfather.  He was truly admired for his many musical talents and will always be remembered for his loving and generous nature.  Visitation will be at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, (vpfh.com) 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ on Thursday, Sept. 20th from 4-8 p.m.  The funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 21st, at 9:30 a.m. in the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church, 454 Pulis Ave., Franklin Lakes, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy’s memory can be made to the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church, Franklin Lakes, NJ.
