Obituary of Francis "Frank" Monahan
Francis “Frank” Monahan age 79 of Wyckoff died peacefully on Friday, August 25, 2017 at his home. Born in Waterbury, CT he lived in New York City before moving to Wyckoff 47 years ago. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth’s RC Church, Wyckoff, NJ. Frank attended Naugatuck High School, graduated from Berkshire School and Brown University, Class of 1961. Frank was an accomplished athlete. At Naugatuck High School he was an All-State football player and captain of his championship basketball team. In 1995, he was inducted into the Naugatuck High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was voted MVP for both football and basketball at Berkshire School. While studying at Brown University he played football, basketball, baseball and golf. After college, Frank became a competitive squash player and won numerous tournaments as a member of the Downtown Athletic Club over the next 25 years. He often remarked, “I never played more than seven days a week.” Frank was a passionate golfer. He won several tournaments as a junior in Connecticut. At times, his passion led to self-inflicted struggles. One of those times was when he showed up at Fort Dix for basic training with his golf clubs. As a young father, he gave up golf for over 15 years to actively coach his sons in soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He was a 22-year member of the Wyckoff Van Pool and received the first and only Lifetime Van Achievement Award, leading a rotating group of personalities in and out of New York City. He started his career as a stock broker at GA Saxton. He was Senior Vice President for EF Hutton and Prudential Securities. His work ethic and passion for the business he loved, earned him the respect of his peers and clients. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Lois, his three sons, Sean and his wife Elizabeth of Toms River, NJ, Kevin and his wife Mondana of Stamford, CT, and Scott Monahan of Hilton Head, SC. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Grace, James, Joseph, Liam and Aiden and his sister, Janet Allgair and brother Thomas Monahan. Visiting will be held on Tuesday 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Vander Plaat Funderal Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. A funeral Mass will follow on Wednesday, 10 AM at St. Elizabeth’s RC Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave, Wyckoff, NJ. Interment at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Paramus, NJ.
