Obituary of June Langill Shaw

June Langill Shaw grew up in South Weymouth, Braintree, Massachusetts where she studied piano and music and spent her summers on Cape Cod. She attended Fisher Junior College, Boston Massachusetts, received an Associate in Art, Secretarial, then joined the United States Navy (WAVE) where she was stationed in Columbia, South Carolina, and advanced to Yeoman 3rd Class. She met her future husband, 2nd Lieutenant, John Shaw of Nutley, New Jersey, fighter pilot of the Mighty Eighth United States Air Force during World War II. They wed on Christmas Eve 1944 prior to John’s deployment overseas. June Langill Shaw was a long time resident of Wyckoff, New Jersey for sixty-six years as beloved wife, mother, environmentalist, piano teacher, and dedicated volunteer. In grateful recognition, June served with distinction as a charter member of the Wyckoff Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary where she was member of the Board for six decades. Commending her meritorious record of service and commitment, June made significant efforts as Branch Chairman, Historian, Publicity Chair and Membership Chair. As Commissioner and the first woman Committee Chairman of the Wyckoff Environmental Commission for over twelve years, June Shaw was appreciated for her work in fighting and eliminating the infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars using natural biological products instead of harsh chemicals for the health of the Wyckoff residents, and to preserve the oak trees throughout the community. In 1982, she was honored with distinction by the Town of Wyckoff for her undying dedication and commitment to eradicating the gypsy moth caterpillar infestation. Along with her husband, John, June founded the Wyckoff Community Club. She was a dedicated member and leader of the Wyckoff Women's Club for sixty plus years, and gave generously of her time and energy as volunteer at the Cerebral Palsy Center, the FLOW Area and the Ridgewood League of Women Voters. In addition, June was a Girl Scout Leader for two years, College Club for over forty years, and the League of Women’s Voters for over fifty years and the PTA. In 2001, a respected WWII Veteran of the United States Naval Reserves, June was honored as Grand Marshall in the Wyckoff Memorial Day Parade and received a Medal of Honor and commendation from the New Jersey Congress. Within all of the spheres of her life’s work as a community leader, June Shaw served as a respected model that established a standard of excellence for others to strive toward. June is survived by John Seymour Shaw, her husband of 72 years; two daughters, Janet Louise Shaw King and Julie Ann Shaw; Son-in-Law, James Michael King; three Grandchildren: Kerry Ellen Szymanski, Dusty Szymanski Sylvanson, Jason Scott Szymanski; and four Great Grandchildren, Noah Joseph Szymanski, Hunter James Szymanski, Leana Grace Szymanski and Kai Archer Sylvanson.
