Obituary of Alan G. Marschall
Alan G. Marschall, age 81 of Midland Park passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. Born in The Bronx, he was a long time resident of Midland Park. Alan was a parishioner of Church of the Nativity, Midland Park, NJ and an active member of the Senior Center of Midland Park.
Alan was born on May 19, 1935 to Claire and Richard Marschall. He married his German Sweetheart, Ortrud Schmidt, in 1971. A graduate of Cardinal Hayes H.S., he served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He remained in the US Army Reserves and Army National Guard in Lodi, N.J. He was recalled to active duty during Gulf War One, to train soldiers at Fort Dix. He retired with honor in 1995 as Sergeant First Class.
Alan worked for many years at Navy Arms and subsequently The US Post Office in Bergen County. Alan is survived by his beloved, Ortrud, and his sister, Joan Hanley. He is the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Marschall and sister, Gertrude Rossi.
He loved history, participated in Civil War reenactments, and volunteered at The West Point Museum. He was an instructor at the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs. He was a member of several volunteer ambulance service in Bergen County. Alan had a soft spot in his heart for animals (especially his beloved Maggie.) He enjoyed meeting new people and was always ready to help a friend or stranger in need. Alan and Ortrud enjoyed visiting family in Sanibel Island and Clearwater, Florida. Alan will be dearly missed. The family is grateful to several very dear friends of Alan who have helped and supported the family.
Visiting, Monday 7-9 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. Funeral Mass Tuesday 10 am at Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect Street, Midland Park, NJ. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY
