Dear Geri, Margaret, Greg and Nanette,
it was in 1980 when I had the privilege to meet you all for my first time in the US, the Big Apple.. but it would have not been the same without him and you. It was not just a student exchange but the beginning of a friendship lasting over a lifetime. Lou, was not only a father a friend, a basketball coach (trying to teach me a sky hook) but a wonderful open minded human being who dedicated his life to passionate young people around him. So many points in common with my Dad, I am sure they will have both a few glasses of good wine wherever they are now.
Throughout the year we kept in touch , visiting whenever possible and he has always the right word, the right advise and overall that wonderful heartwarming smile.
We miss you terribly Nonno Luigi but this is just an "Arrivederci".
Con immenso affetto

In a beautiful family, with a love of story, music and family, Lou stood tall. I anticipated talking with him, always looking forward to his insights, humor, and respectful manners. He and Geri have become two of my heroes, precious people who are a gift to others with a clear joy for life and family. I can almost picture the gusto and good conversations he is bringing to heaven. I imagine chords of gratitude for his life that kept family history alive and cherished...all of those family members brought to life by Lou's stories, interest and passion for traditions just standing up to welcome him. To those of us who are teachers, Lou was an inspiration. He surely was the lifetime learner that everyone aspires to be and a joyful teacher that all of us should aspire to be. I am a better person for having known him. My prayers go out to Geri and Lou's family and friends. Dear Lou, did you know what a difference you made? God Bless You and all of those you care about.
Sincerely,
Patty Cassella

Geri, Nanette, Margaret and Greg.. Let me start by thanking you for sharing this wonderful man. If for only a short time, he inspired me to better things. If not for several hundred newspaper clippings educating me on a variety of issues from investments do the last Presidential race he had a wise opinion on them all. My Dad passed away in 2001 and I was blessed with a surrogate Dad. I can't explain the loss that you all feel, but Im pretty close. This great Man welcomed me into your Family, never judged and never had a harsh word for me no matter what nonsense opinion I chose to impart. Probably the most (self) educated person he could converse on any topic no matter how mundane and value your take on the subject (as wrong as mine usually are). Im honored and humbled that I was able to spend several wonderful years with this great Man and to be there when he was unfortunately called home. Lou I hope I did half as much for you as you did for me Sir. I love you so very much and I will miss you always.
Chris.

To the Cassella family,
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of Mr. Cassella. I will always have fond memories of him from taking his classes in AP US and European history as well as being VP and President of the debate team. His teaching style and kindness always made me excited for his classes and his insights into world events helped me become a better critical thinker. I still have a copy of his recommendation letter to our shared Alma Mater, Villanova. Undoubtedly, he was one of the teachers that had a profound influence on me both while attending DBP and in the years since. He truly will be missed! I'm glad I was able to experience, if only for a short while, his generosity and friendship.

We were so sorry to learn of Lou's passing, and he will be sorely missed. I remember fondly all the times we spent together over the years, whether it be at 43 Hackensack Street, Union NJ, or Upper Greenwood Lake. Despite the geographical distances between us in recent years, Lou always kept us informed via email of family events, & other happenings, and was instrumental in keeping the "cousins" in touch with each other. May he rest in peace.
Love,
Bruce & Susie Cassella

We send you much love and strength at this time. Your dad and grandfather was a great man. A true gentleman and hero to all the families and friends of SPF Raiders Football. The best fan in the stands. He always smiled and had wonderful uplifting things to say to everyone he met. You know he loved you all. We are all blessed to have known him.

We have lost one of the Founding Fathers of Pascack Hills High School.
I had the good fortune of having Lou return my phone call (He was the only
supervisor who did!) as I put in a request to do student teaching at Pascack
Hills. It was the winter of 1986. Much to my surprise (and pleasure), late that summer, he called again and said "Something's happened up here...are you still available to teach?" I was the last guy that Lou hired before he eventually left for Don Bosco.
He had the uncanny ability to marry his duties as our supervisor with a desire to socialize with us as well. It was an ideal arrangement that we did not take for granted. Instead, we cherished our relationship with Lou; we knew we had it good and we appreciated it. He established educational standards by which we measured ourselves, especially when it came to "reading within our field."
As George Mamunes just said to me over the phone, "We've lost our captain."
Yes we have...he was a prince of a man.

Dear Geri, Margaret, Gregory and Nanette,
My heart goes out to you; I just cannot believe that my dear cousin is gone from your life and ours. Lou was always there for me, when Nonnie died, when my father died, again when my mother died. He came to every art exhibition I was in. He was so much fun to be with. He loved family, and I loved it when he would take out all the family albums, postcards, letters from relatives long gone. His quest for history and knowledge was insatiable. What a wonderful person he was. I will miss him terribly, and I know that you will too. God comfort you at this terrible time.
Much love,
Elaine
