Obituary of Dr. Joseph Boyle III
Boyle, Dr. Joseph III, age 82, of Wyckoff, passed away on Thursday, January 19th, 2017 in Ridgewood, NJ. He was born in Glen Ridge, NJ on March 10, 1934 to the late Joseph Boyle, Jr. and the late Frances Reed Mapes Boyle. He grew up in Totowa Boro, NJ and graduated from Passaic Valley High School Class of '52. He received his BS from Tufts University and MD degree from the Charter Class of Seton Hall College of Medicine (now known as UMDNJ). He married his high school sweetheart Patricia Allan Vreeland on June 22, 1957. He did his residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. He served with honors in the US Air Force as a Flight Surgeon and Captain ('63-66) at the School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks AFB in San Antonio, TX receiving a patent on a NASA Astronaut Resting Suit. Upon leaving the Air Force he spent his entire working career as a professor at his Alma Mater, now known as the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark teaching freshman Physiology to decades of incoming medical and dental students. He also did research in cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. He was awarded the Golden Apple Award by the American Medical Student Association in 1977 by the Class of 1980. He loved to travel, sail his sailboats, surf on his computers, attend Scottish Festivals, garden, and watch his NY Giants (win or lose). In his retirement years, he became an avid genealogist, tracing his mother's Mapes lineage back to the 1600s. He actively volunteered for many organizations including Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, Jaycees, YMCA, and his beloved church, St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Ridgewood, NJ. He is survived by his daughter Debra Louise Boyle Leighton and husband G. Timothy Leighton and son Joseph Edwin Boyle and wife Ellen Marie Denson Boyle, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother's 2 sons and their families and by his best friend Anna Andrews and her 5 daughters and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife and son, Bruce Allan Boyle. He was also predeceased by his brother Richard D. Boyle. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 23rd from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 24th at 11am at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, 169 Fairmount Road, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Private cremation will be held and interment will occur in the spring at the memorial garden of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph’s memory can be made to St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, 169 Fairmount Road, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
