Obituary of Helen J. Suehnholz
Helen Jane Suehnholz (Andrews), a resident of Glen Rock for over 50 years, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 19 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, on May 1, 1928. At an early age, her family moved to Wood-Ridge, NJ. She graduated from Wood-Ridge High School and attended Syracuse University. At the age of 19, she started dating another Wood-Ridge high school graduate, Herman Suehnholz. They were married in July of 1948 and moved to their first home on Church Street in Lodi. The family eventually moved to Wood-Ridge where they lived for ten years before moving to Glen Rock in 1964. In 1969, Helen graduated from Rutgers with a degree in Economics. Because of her strong belief in a good education, she served two terms on the Glen Rock Board of Education. She was also a volunteer with the Valley Hospital Auxiliary and West Bergen Mental Health. She was passionate about swimming, and as a young girl would swim across Budd Lake as her father rowed a boat alongside her. For many years she started her day by swimming laps at the Wyckoff YMCA. Helen was an avid reader and she enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting and doing crossword puzzles. She and her husband Herman enjoyed traveling and going to the opera and ballet. She was an accomplished bridge player and achieved a master status.
Helen was a loving and devoted mother to her six children. She is survived by her children Elaine (Warner) Canto, Robert (Maria Alford) Suehnholz, Mary Jo (Michael) Dervos, Claire (Kevin) Clinton, Margaret (Victor) Quinn, and Laura (Rob) Rundle, her grandchildren Natalie Grant, Molly Higgins, George & Michael Suehnholz, Michelle Peterson, Melanie & Matthew Martin, Kyle Clinton, Evan & Meredith Quinn, and Joanna, Caitlin, & Christopher Rundle, her great grandchildren Ellison, Ava, & McKenna Grant, Colin & Alaina Higgins, Kelsey Peterson, Arya Elwell, Micah Martin, and Julie Quinn, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Herman in 2015 after sixty-seven years of marriage, her parents Walter & Helen Andrews, her sister Nancy Simon, and her brother Robert Andrews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise of Paramus for their loving care of Helen these past few months. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, N.J 07481. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 23rd at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine R.C. Church, 905 S. Maple Ave., Glen Rock, N.J. 07452. Interment to follow at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, N.J.
