Obituary of Simon Peter Hartog

NORTH HALEDON – Simon P. Hartog, 106, died Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Holland Christian Home, here, following a brief illness. Born Feb. 14, 1910, to Peter C. and Petronella “Nettie” (Offringa) Hartog in Paterson, he grew up, married and raised a family there before moving to Hawthorne in 1964. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Crestwood Village, Whiting in 1977. He moved to the Holland Christian Home in 2006. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years, Belle (Melissant) Hartog in 2005 and son, Peter C. Hartog in 2004. He is survived by daughter-in-law Jeanette Hartog of Pennsville, N.J, son John and wife Beverly of Mission Viejo, Cal., daughter Betty-Jane and husband Donald Baker of Wyckoff and daughter Nella and husband Michael Hobson of Chichester, N. H.; six grandchildren, Lori (Hartog) Smith, Kevin Hartog, Marcy (Hartog) Westland, Kimberly (Baker) McKenzie, Glenn Baker and Lisa Albarelli; twelve great-grandchildren, Caitlin (Smith) Tillberg, Rachel and Natalie Smith, Sarah Westland, Abby and Toby Hartog, Cole and Grant Timmerwilke, Aaron and Julie Baker and Trevor and Drew Jarkowsky; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Johanna (Hartog) Kroeze, Nellie Hartog, Casper Hartog, and John Hartog. Mr. Hartog finished the eighth grade and attended technical school training in carpentry apprenticing at A. B. Van Houten in Paterson, beginning in 1928. He later worked for the Ridgewood office of Railway Express in the 30s and 40s. He then worked for Hessler Laundry Service in Paterson until 1957 when he bought State Laundry in Hackensack. He retired in 1975. He was a man of faith serving on various church and school boards and almost never missed Sunday services until his recent illness. He was married in and was a former member of the Madison Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Paterson and more recently attended the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church. He was a member of the Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Fair Lawn. While living in Whiting, he attended the Redeemer Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Toms River, which he was instrumental in organizing. He and his many words of wisdom will be missed by all. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 6, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the chapel of the Holland Christian Home, 151 Graham Ave., North Haledon, with a funeral service immediately following. Private graveside services will be held for the family July 7, in Whiting. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 151 S. Broadway, Fair Lawn, N.J. 07410 or the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, Wyckoff. Online condolences may be expressed at vpfh.com.
