Pat, I feel as if I lost a brother. Hugh was the classiest person I ever had the privilege to know. When I first met him at Johanna back in 1989 he graciously showed me the ropes on how to succeed in the Johanna system. Over the next 20+ years that we worked together we became good friends who would do anything for each other. His stories and his positive outlook always cheered up whoever he was with. I will forever cherish having known him.

Johanna Foods, and he was a sweet man and a good friend! I know this time will
be very difficult, but He is now at peace, and your wonderful memories will fill your

I remember Hugh’s laugh - a sudden, joyful sound. His welcoming “Hello, there!”, drawing you in. The fact that he was game for all kinds of fun, spreading happiness all around him. His reliability as a true and loving neighbor and friend.
I could keep you here all day with endless stories of great memories, and I know you have your own. For me , Hugh has left an indelible imprint on my heart – he was a brother to my husband, he taught a little girl how to dance with a gorilla, he treated another little girl like a grown-up at a dinner in New York, and he showed me – wisely – that you never serve just one flavor of ice cream, you serve three.
Hugh, I will miss you, and if we ever meet again, I’ll bring the ice cream.

Nineteen years ago my family had the greatest fortune of moving right across the street from the Snyders. I remember being greeted by Hugh as I moved boxes into the garage. He asked if he could help, of course. He was a big, almost imposing figure with a big friendly smile. I had no idea that he and Pat would become such an important part of our lives. The kindness they showed to us and their spirit of inclusion laid the basis for a great friendship.
I also remember the first time our girls went to their beautiful house. I held my breath as little hands reached out to explore all the delicate things in that magical place. Hugh said not to worry, and I thought WOW, and over the years Hugh and Pat made my girls feel so incredibly appreciated and loved.
As fellow DIYers Hugh and I had something in common. He was always willing to help out or lend a tool and we had great fun doing projects together. Like cutting a couch in half to get it upstairs and then reassembling it. Or rebuilding a small porch and then letting Pat dress us up for a party, in grass skirts and coconut bras. BTWs, we each needed our own grass tablecloths for the skirts. We had many, many wonderful times of sharing and cooking or playing or just hanging together. And he ALWAYS had my back.
It is no surprise to see the outpouring of love for Hugh and Pat. I’ve seen and experienced firsthand his kindness, generosity, integrity, humor and love. I am incredibly lucky to have had so much time with him and Pat and I am honored that Hugh was my friend and I will always savour our friendship.

Papa Hugh (as we knew him) was an amazing person who brought so much happiness and fun into our lives growing up on Washington Place. He cared deeply for his family and friends and it always showed through his actions; whenever somebody asks about the people next door I tell them they are pretty much my family.
There are countless stories to remember him by, apart from the many he told, that show his genuine kindness and what a good person he was. He will be missed by many.
Love you, Papa Hugh - Rest in Peace

The world lost a beautiful man on Tuesday morning. Most of us spend a great deal of our lives having little or no relationship with those who live in house next door. This is not the case with my neighborhood. We all happen to be a big family that takes care of each other, and we have that compassion for each other because Hugh Snyder brought it out of us. I was not related by blood, but since my birth he has watched me grow and I loved him as family. He was a remarkably kind soul that has touched so many of our hearts. Everybody in our neighborhood cherished him so much. If you needed him for anything in the world, he was there to help. On Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and the 4th of July, our families would come into his home and celebrate with his family. We would all feel the comfort and warmth knowing he'd be sitting right there in that same living room chair. He was one of the strongest and most loving men I've ever known. My heart especially goes out to his beautiful wife and family, and his grandchildren who I've loved like siblings. Words can't express how grateful I feel to have had him in my life and he will be missed dearly.

Papa fulfilled the role of grandfather for me fabulously. I will miss his warm smile and how it made me feel special every time I saw him whether it was the first time in a few months or just the other day. I also loved hearing his comical stories that always seemed to fit a situation we were talking about. I am very blessed and honored to have been brought into the family. It has been amazing knowing Papa and he will always be in my thoughts. I love you so much Nana.

He was more than a friend, father and grandfather to so many of us. He cherished the gift of life and by doing so, filled our lives so much more. His generosity, humor, kindness was boundless and will certainly carry us on even in his absence.
There are simply not enough kind words in this world to describe this wonderful man and all of them would fall short of telling what a truly great spirit he was. We will be celebrating his life for the rest of ours.

I am so sorry and sad that Hugh is gone, he will be very very missed! I can't quite imagine how we will go on with Martini Mondays or any other gatherings without him. He was always the life of the party and the center of everything and the driving force of all we did together as neighbors. It is so strange to think about the next round of holidays without Hugh, I can only say that he has got to be with us in spirit...... no one could wear a pair of leiderhosen like Hugh! I am also very sad to be away and not there for Pat in her time of such terrible grief---- but I know her family is with her and I am grateful for that.
Marcus and Olivia and I send our love and prayers.

I will miss you, big brother. Just a couple of days ago I was sharing with your niece some of my childhood memories of you --your visits home from the Navy, coming to my rescue one winter's night when I was very young, and my babysitting your three children. You are in my prayers. I have always loved you.

We were so sorry to hear of Hugh's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Pat, and with your whole family. From the first time I rode with Hugh in his Suburban as his new boss at Johanna, and he ran out of gas on the Mass Pike, I knew he was a special guy. We laughed right up until the taxi picked us up. After all these years, I still find myself telling stories from my Hugh years. He always had a smile on and was a true gentleman and a dedicated and loyal employee. Rest in peace Hugh!

To Pat & family
I was so sad to hear about Hugh. I will always remember the good times I had working with him at Johanna. He was a dear sweet man and a gentleman. Everywhere I went with him everyone loved and adored him. He was loyal to a fault. Whenever I was lost I called Hugh for directions, he loved to help you. HIs stories made me laugh and even though I was only at his house a few times, what an experience, I felt like I was at a 5 star restaurant.
I feel lucky to have known him.
Rest in Peace Hugh.

I am so sorry to hear about Hugh's passing. I worked with Hugh for several years at Johanna Foods and he was a delightful person. His charm and personality really made an impression on me and many others. His stories were always spectacular, ones to remember. I was also fortunate enough to share a few Christmas Eve parties at the house in Ridgewood which included many interesting cocktails and a spread of food, enough for an Army!
