I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Harris' passing. He was my favorite teacher at NVRHS. I became a history major in college, which had a great deal to do with him. He was witty, fun and so intelligent. We were lucky to have him as a teacher.

Mr. Harris was responsible for showing me that history was more than just dates and facts. His AP class was the reason I eventually majored in History. Although my life led me to work in the hi-tech industry, the skill of looking for all the factors that fed into an outcome and understanding them served me better than any MBA training ever did. He was my ideal of a teacher. I am so sorry for your loss, but so grateful he was in my life.

Mr. Harris was one of the few teachers that left a lasting impression on me. He was not only a good teacher, but a great teacher. A life changer. A well-educated, respectable man, he was classy all the way and I was privileged to have him for honors history. I somehow managed to achieve the highest score in the class on his famous difficult honors history exam, but believe me it was all of his expert teaching, not me. As a teacher now of 38 years myself, he influenced me in every way positive
possible. He was the epitome of what a teacher should be.
My condolences to his wife and family. He was a great man.

I'm sorry to hear of Dr. Harris' passing but happy to hear that he lived a long life. He was my History teacher during his first year at Northern Valley, was one of my favorite teachers, inspired me to major in History in college and although I did not follow in this field I still read history regularly and have a love for it that all started in his class. I'm sure he inspired many other students as well.

My name is Kent Gompert, Class of 1969, Northern Valley Regional HS. Dr. Harris was one of three instructors I was fortunate enough to have had in school, and one that kindled my interest in History during my senior in High School.
His taking the time to help me pursue that interest in History, led to Honors Classes, and then a 35 year career teaching the subject at the secondary and college levels.
Fred was the first to get me started down the road to a successful career in this area. I had often thought of trying to contact him to let him know of the good that he did for me and other students like myself. Letting him know that now is too late, but I wanted family to know that he inspired a whole generation like myself to pick up the torch and follow in his footsteps.
I recently retired from teaching History about five years ago but my classroom career has morphed into one of working independently in archives and historical sites finding materials for various history software programs, to be used by hundreds of other teachers.
As an example, on Facebook, I am the admin for a website called Scholarships, Grants and Summer Institutes for Teachers, a page for History geeks like myself who have similar interests in the field. Dr. Harris would be proud to know that because of his work, and that of two other professors that I had in college and graduate school, that this site alone has over 2600 members, most of whom are Social Studies or History instructors.
My condolences on your loss. Fred was a great teacher and an honorable man.
Sincerely,
Kent Gompert

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Harris' death. I was a student of his and he always challenged his students. I still remember reading "The Prince" by Machiavelli. I am sorry for your loss.

Dr. Harris brought both intellect and personality to his classroom. We all cherished the time we had with him. He made us all better people. He was the finest of a very good lot of mentors. He is missed already...

We were so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. I did so enjoy working with him at Demarest High School. When he retired, I always remembered him saying that the first thing he was going to do was change his alarm clock! One of Fred's traditional gestures, when students were trying to explain why they didn't get something done that was due, was to put his fist to his heart like he was hearing what they said but that was all he was doing. Fred was truly a great guy and was missed in both the History Department and the whole school by all who knew him when he retired. He was a giant of a teacher, and a good friend to us. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family at this sad time.

I extend my deepest condolences to Fred's family. When I came to Northern Valley in 1985 Fred was one of the giants of the Social Studies department. He was a teacher's teacher and as such a wonderful role model. When he retired he was characteristically generous in sharing his Modern European History materials with me and thus helping me teach the course. Ever the gentleman he will be missed.
With deepest sympathy,
Alexandra

I AM DEEPLY SADDENED WITH THE NEWS OF FRED'S PASSING.
DURING THE YEARS AT NORTHERN VALLEY, FRED, WITH HIS TONE AND READY SMILE AND LAUGHTER, COMPLEMENTED EVERY ASPECT OF "LIFE" IN THE CLASSROOM, THE HALLWAYS, THE TEACHERS' LOUNGE, THE CAFETERIA, AND EVERYTHING IN AND ABOUT SCHOOL.
WITHOUT QUESTION, HIS UNPARALLELED DEDICATION TO HIS WORK, ACTIVITIES, FRIENDS, AND FAMILY WILL BE REMEMBERED AS MERITORIOUS.

Please accept my sympathy and condolences. Dr. Harris, who was my senior Modern European History Teacher in 1970-71 was one of the best teachers I have ever had--in high school, in college or in graduate school. I will never forget his concept of socio-political dynamics; that societies moved between centralization and decentralization. We are blessed, those who were taught by him. I hope you can find peace from God and solace in the memories of Dr. Fred Harris. He will be in my mind as he was when I had him.
