Obituary of Marian G. Carey
Carey, Marian G. (nee Burke), of Wyckoff, went to her eternal reward on Thursday, April 14th, 2016. Marian was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She moved to New York City, where she attended Manhattanville College, having earned a scholarship to study music. Upon graduation, she worked as a music teacher in New York, continued to study voice and pursued a singing career.
Marian was an accomplished singer and actress, having toured with the Sigmund Romberg Orchestra, and appeared in Broadway productions of several shows, including "Top Banana," "Brigadoon," "Kiss Me Kate" and "Guys and Dolls," in which she starred as "Sarah, the Mission Doll."
Marian was married to J. Edwin Carey, in 1954, and started their family in New York before moving to Wyckoff in 1959. She became a Choir Director at St. Elizabeth's Church, and Music Teacher at St. Elizabeth's School. Later, she was the Musical Director at Nativity Church in Midland Park.
Marian was a generous volunteer of her time and talent. An active parishioner at St. Elizabeth's was a member of the Rosary Society and their prayer group. She directed the Wyckoff Woman's choir and performed regularly at churches, hospitals, nursing homes and other venues in the Bergen County area.
Marian was preceded in death by her loving husband, J. Edwin Carey, her parents, Walter and Mary Burke of Pittsburgh, PA, and her sister, Dorothy McInnes, of McKeesport, PA. She is survived by her daughter, Brianne Wright and her husband, David Wright, her son, Christopher Carey and his wife, Lisa Keegan Carey, of Mandeville, LA, her grandchildren, Christopher Wright, Brigid Wright, Colleen Wright, and Katherine Carey, as well as her sister, Michelle Conlow, and her brother in law, Peter Conlow and their daughters, Megan, Stephanie, Siobhan and Caitlin, and nephew, Kevin McInnes and niece, Melanie McInnes.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 18th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, NJ.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 19th at 11:30 a.m., at St. Elizabeth's R.C. Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff, NJ.
Internment to follow at Maryrest Cemetery, 25 Seminary Rd., Mahwah, NJ.
Donations in Marian's memory can be made to the American Alzheimer's Association.
