Obituary of Richard W. Gaines

Richard Gaines, Ph.D., 68, born in NYC, died in Ramsey, NJ after a long illness on Tuesday, March 8. Devoted husband and best friend of Pamela Poppalardo. Adoring father of Simon and Madeleine. Cousin of Earl Wasserman and Eileen Corbin. Beloved brother-in-law of Jacqueline and Wayne and fond “uncle” to their children and grandchildren. Dear friend of Leif and Charlotte, Jim, Todd, Ernie, Chuck, Alice and David, Donaldo, Pam B., Patrick, Missy, Susan, Tom G., Al and Roberta, Philip, Angela and many others. A graduate of Middlebury College, Dr. Gaines received his doctorate from New York University. Born in Manhattan, he adapted well to life in New Jersey and planned wonderful vacations for his family. A skilled and enthusiastic chef, his Sunday family dinners were very special times for him, Pamela, Simon, Maddi and their friends. Well-known among his friends for his love and knowledge of classical music, he returned to the piano as an adult student. A highly dedicated psychologist in Ridgewood, NJ, Dr. Gaines initiated the Anxiety Disorders Program at West Bergen Mental Healthcare where he continued in a training and consulting role until very recently. Dr. Gaines was formerly the director of both the Family Center (child abuse prevention and treatment program) and Child Psychiatry Services at Presbyterian Hospital in NYC where he reshaped the clinical division and was a respected supervisor and mentor. His friendship and affection, once given, were remarkable in strength, endurance, and expression. He will be missed by many close friends and colleagues. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Anxiety Disorders Program for Children and Youth at West Bergen Mental Healthcare, 120 Chestnut Street, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
