I would never have passed statistics if not for the hours Grandpa spent with me the weekend before the final. He explained an entire semester of work in those short hours and he did it in a way I could understand and apply. That is a true gift, and I think anyone who knows my math ability would say he had a whole lot of patience and love in his heart to sit through that.

I just want to say that I vacationed with the Ladds and thought Don was an absolutely amazing man...bright, funny, kind and loving. I will miss him dearly as well. Tara, you are soooo lucky to have known such an amazing man! And Barrett has those qualities as well so they are alive and well in him as well. He lives on in Barrett.

Dear Barrett and Tara, Sucheta and I are truly sorry for your loss and we offer you our utmost condolences. Losing someone so close to you is one of the hardest things in life. We were lucky to meet and know Don on few occasions but he has left a great impression on us. When most people his age are putting on brakes and looking for ways to slow down in retired life, Don slammed his foot on the accelerator. It was simply amazing for us to find out how busy, fulfilling and giving his life was. He was kind, talented, well read and so widely traveled. Those who did not get to meet him, missed out knowing a great man. Please convey our condolences to Joan. We are sorry that we would not be able to attend the memorial service. Love, Sucheta & Shri

I got to know Donald Ladd and his beloved wife, Joan, through the marriage of our daughter Tara to their son, Barrett. That was nearly 10 years ago. It didn’t take long to realize that Donald & Joan were special people— thoughtful, gracious, loving and caring. Both were dedicated to each other to no end, and to their family, especially the grandchildren. Donald was well read; well informed and thought through the topics better than most. We all have opinions; Donald did, too. But, Donald had his facts right. If he disagreed, he did so in a most gentle and agreeable manner. He was a man of few words, but you’d better listened when he spoke. He enjoyed his life to the fullest, always with a smile on his face and never showing any regrets. He kept himself going as best as he could and did so until the very end. I learnt a lot from him, among which most importantly, how to interact with the grandchildren. To say, I will miss him doesn’t quite do justice to the man he was. Farewell, my friend. May Providence watch over your beloved wife and family, as you embark on the final journey which we all in time will take.

Donald (Grandpa Ladd to my generation) will surely be missed. He was as kind as he was smart, and that's saying a lot. I remember him teaching me the basics of computer programming during one of my many stays at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Computers have been a huge part of my life and livelihood ever since! After last seeing him a few weeks ago, a song came on the radio that stirred up strong emotions; even more so now. If you have a few minutes, please listen to My Hero by Foo Fighters. The best version, in my opinion, is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c3WhbnlyPM Donald was truly a hero to many. I'm glad he was able to live a fulfilling life and see so much of the world. I know he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Don had a printing press in his basement; he printed my campaign cards for Student Council in 1944. (I came in 11th in a field of 25. Only the top 10 were elected in that voting. But my home room voted me to the Council--and I was elected president by the home room representatives)
We all got a big kick out of "rebelling" at Harding Junior high; one day we wore socks that did not match. Oh how bold we were!! I specifically recall that Don wore one red sock and one green sock.
Don was very popular; a real good guy.
