To the Ryffel family and all who knew and loved Lou: We all suffered a tragic and unexpected loss when Lou left us so suddenly. Much like you, I am in shock and saddened beyond what mere words could ever attempt to express. Lou's vibrance and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of the many whose lives he touched. I regret missing the opportunity to see him during my visit back East in early July. Who could have known it would be the last such opportunity ... at least on an earthly basis. I feel so fortunate that I spoke with him in late June. We spoke at length about his sobriety "birthday" and he beamed with pride and accountability. His pride was contagious It deeply impressed me and I, too felt such pride in how far he'd come in his life. He was in a great place. Lou was fortunate to have met his alcoholism addiction head-on, and to have made reparations, amends and improve the quality of his relationships. I am so grateful that he accomplished this, and ended his time here on a high note. He spoke about how close he'd grown with his mom, Bette, and spoke about the gratitude he felt towards Matthew, acknowledging how he'd stepped in many times as a second father over the years, and noted how particularly important that was in past years during darker times. He talked about how proud he was of his children. He also spoke fondly of Wendy, and told me how much he liked the person she had chosen as her mate. He added, "I don't blame her ... I really like the guy!" He told me that he had found a higher power, and how he'd let go of his anger. He spoke of his affection for Karl, Bea and Johnny, and his Aunts who stepped in to care for the boys after his mom, Anita passed. Lou was also incredibly grateful to the people at work, who gave him many chances to prove himself, despite how many times he had disappointed them in the past. He made it clear to me that he owed them so much, especially this time, and he was grateful to have had the chance to prove his worthiness, and was determined not to let them down. There were many, many times I spoke with Lou during his dark periods, but many more in recent years as I made it a habit to call Lou to "keep me company" as I walked around the track nearby my home in San Diego. We had such long conversations. I will always cherish "our walks" and although I have not resumed this activity, will think of him fondly each time I circle the track, and remember all that he was, and the man he became. I will both miss you deeply, and remember you with fondness and respect.

Dear Betty, Matt, John, Bea and Karl, We are so deeply saddened by your loss. Growing up with all of you left me with some wonderful memories. Every school day, Louie and I would walk to the bus stop together. We also shared homeroom at school for many years. During those years, Louie and I shared so many happy times and he was always such a good friend to me. May your loving memories of Louie bring you some comfort and peace at this very difficult time. All of you remain in our thoughts and prayers. With our love, Barbara and Scott
