Obituary of Martha Ann Painter
Painter, Martha Ann (Martie), 81, of Ho-Ho-Kus passed away quietly with her family at her side on Sunday, July 17, 2011. Born and raised in St. Charles, Missouri, Martha was the daughter of Dr. George Gross and Delphine (Blackburn) Gross. Martha attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart from first to twelfth grade and was awarded the Child of Mary medal her senior year in high school. Her education continued at St. Louis University where she was one of the first women to graduate with a BS degree in Physical Therapy. She and her beloved husband, Jack moved to Ho-Ho-Kus in 1963, where they raised their family. Martha was a physical therapist at Valley Hospital for 25 years. Her patients not only appreciated her strong will and determination in their rehabilitation, but the difference she made in the quality of their life. She volunteered countless hours at the Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus; she was a competitive bridge player, avid tennis player and a member of St. Gabriel's Parish. Martha and her husband traveled globally throughout Europe, Africa, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Brazil, Sumatra, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka and the Americas. For many summers, she especially enjoyed the company of family and friends in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She is survived by her beloved husband, Jack of 58 years, three daughters, two sons and twelve grandchildren. Christie Mahle and her husband Dave of Wyckoff, Karen Randall and her husband Tom of Ho-Ho-Kus, Carolyn Tarantino and her husband Len of Ho-Ho-Kus, John Painter and his wife Joanne of Wyckoff and Robert Painter and his wife Jill of Ridgewood and cherished grandchildren Caitlin, Colin and Lauren Fink, Thomas and Alexandra Randall, Bryce and Brittany Tarantino, Colleen and Jack Painter, and Bridget, Lane and Natalie Painter. She also is survived by her sisters, Jeanne Mudd and her husband Gordon and Gail Mundmiller and her husband Don both of St. Charles, Missouri. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 30th at 10:00am, St. Gabriel's R.C. Church 88 E. Saddle River Rd. Saddle River, New Jersey. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations may be sent in honor of Martha Painter to the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 81, Ho-Ho-Kus, and New Jersey 07423.
