To Loretta and Jake, please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. Allan was one of the first to welcome me, like so many of us, to the Compuserve Forum and every one he "spoke" with there will tell you he was always smart, funny, and insightful, a genuine pleasure who added real value to the lives of everyone he met. I had the good fortune to meet with him several times over the years and found that if anything he was even more of a gentleman and interesting person in real life, an honor to have as a friend. He will be missed.

I'm another old Compuserve friend of Allan's. Allan was the heart of the Comics Forum, always being the first to welcome newcomers and encourage them to join in. He was a very modest man and I don't think it ever occurred to him how important he was to us and how big a part he played in making us a family. We were lucky to have him.

Loretta and Jake, I was very sorry to hear of your loss. I "met" Allan on the CompuServe Forum about 1993, and we shared many enjoyable hours discussing old and new comics there. He was a genial and kind-hearted member liked by everyone there. We recently reconnected on FaceBook, and I was enjoying his comments again after so many years. He will be missed very much.

Never met Allan face to face. Only knew him from posting on line. And through this (one could argue cold) medium of modern communication, his warmth, intelligence, and humor always came through without fail. To state that he will be missed is simply a fact. My prayers to all of you, family and close friends who knew him best.

I first met Allan online in the Compuserve Comics and Animation forum, then later in "real life" when he invited me to his home and introduced me to his family. His kindness and generosity was second to none. When I was laid off from my job last year, Allan was one of the first people to contact me, having gone though a career setback himself he was there to offer advice and support at a time when I needed both. That meant the world to me at the time and still does. Eventually the conversation turned from job setbacks and the frustration of dealing with the unemployment office to our shared mutual love of the Justice Society and silver age Superman stories. Within minutes the conversation went from depressing to childhood excitement. I will always treasure those conversations as I treasured our friendship. He will be missed.

While I've known Allan for years online, I only had the pleasure of meeting him once in person. To my delight he was every bit as warm and friendly in real life as he was online. Allan was a true old style gentleman, and the world is a poorer place for losing him. My thoughts are with you

Friends and family of Allan: It was my extreme pleasure to know Allan as a fellow contributor to the old Comics Forum on Compuserve. I met Allan a couple of times and he was as friendly and gracious in person as he seemed to be online. It's a great loss to all of us who knew him on Compuserve and a loss to the world of such a wonderful soul. My heart goes out to his immediate family along with his many online friends. Allan will be sorely missed.

Dearest Jake and Loretta, I give to you my deepest sympathies and wanted you to know how well loved he was by so many people. I was one of the lucky folks who got to know Allan via CompuServe. He was warm and engaging among so many other wonderful traits. I enjoyed our conversations and the chats we all used to have with our CIS gang. The world is a little less "shiny" without him with us.

Jake and Loretta, my thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of loss. Allan was genuinely one of the nicest men I've ever met. Like others, I first met him online but did once visit your home when Jake was a teen and had a few lunches in Manhattan with him when he was working there. Allan was so modest and humble, yet he was so incredibly intelligent, witty and nice to all that he stood out as one of the good guys. I know how proud he was of Jake and I can't help but think how proud he'd be that Jake contacted his online friends and thought of us. Although it's such a shock, I'm glad he didn't suffer and passed in his sleep. I hope he was dreaming of the books he loved and his beloved family.

I too met Allan online in the CompuServe Comics & Animation Forum back in 1989, and had the good fortune to meet him in person at ComicsFest in Philadelphia, and a time or two elsewhere. What a lovely gentleman - we reconnected last fall on Facebook, and it was so wonderful to get back in touch. Allan was one of the good ones. His death comes as a great shock, and he will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences to the family on your terrible loss.

This is very upsetting to hear. Allan was one of the first people I met when I first joined the internet world back in 1994 through the Compuserve Comics and Animation Forum, and we regularly met up for lunches in midtown where we'd discuss our mutual love of comics. In fact, he was one of the few people I regularly talked to about comics face to face, and I always got to hear first-hand how proud he was of his son Jake. Only learned a few weeks back that Allan was on Facebook and we had one exchange, and of course, I was hoping to reconnect since it had been too long. This is a huge blow to find out of his sudden passing after not having seen him for so long, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of his family. Allan was one of the good ones, through and through, and the world is a sadder place with his passing.

I am also a friend from the old CompuServe days. I met Allan in person only a few times, at gatherings at conventions. Allan was one of the most interesting, most intelligent comics and SF fans I had the pleasure of knowing and I was so glad that we met up again a few months ago via Facebook. I was hoping for the chance to see him face-to-face again someday. Allan, you have been taken from us too soon and too suddenly. My prayers are with Allan and Jake and all of the Lappin family. Pat

I am one of Allan's friends from the old Comics & Animation Forum on Compuserve. I was shocked and saddened to hear the unexpected news of his passing. He was a true gentleman, intelligent, kind, witty, and always polite and friendly. He touched us all with his warmth and great personality, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. My heart and sincere condolences go out to all the members of his family at this sad time.
