I am shocked and saddened by the loss of a wonderful man. Mr. Cassidy was my high school history teacher my sophomore year. Throughout high school he always was a terrific motivator and cared for all of his students. It was no surprise when I asked him to write me a letter of recommendation for college...and it was a great letter! I am so happy I had the chance to communicate with him on and off over the years through email, and I let him know that he was the reason I wanted to be a great teacher myself. Rest in peace Mr. Cassidy, you are an angel now and forever! Love from your student Kristen

Our hearts are filled with sorrow today with the passing of a great man. An adventurer, a teacher, a family man and a best friend are some of the words we use to describe Uncle Mike. We have shared countless days hiking, biking and enjoying life together with you. Whether it was at 14,411 feet atop Mount Rainier or in your backyard with friends and family, every day was special. Your spirit and especially your joking wit will always be remembered. Our prayers go out to all of your family, especially Marilyn and Marissa. We love you... Sam, Stacey, Emma & Julian

Mr. Cassidy was a real treasure in my childhood. He was my history teacher at Union School and RHS. His love of learning the stories and the lives behind past events (as opposed to just dates and facts) opened up a whole new curiosity, respect and concern in me for people who lived at a different time. Just as important to him was appreciating the stories and lives of those currently living, and that was contagious too. He shared his belief in and respect for me (and so many other students) lavishly - and it mattered. I remember re-reading a copy of the recommendation letter he wrote me when I needed a boost in college. My heart breaks for his family's loss and the loss of a great man. The sun truly rises and sets on less of a world. I'm grateful for his contribution to my life.

I was so sorry to learn of Mike's death. Both my daughters were fortunate to have him as their teacher. He taught my oldest daughter, Michele, at Union School and then my youngest daughter, Kristen, at RHS. Mike also came to Kristen's graduation party from Columbia University and we still have a picture of him from that party. I also worked at RHS for a few years and always remember Mike talking about Marissa and her ice skating, etc. He was a very proud Dad! Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss.

In the 1990's "RHS GOOD GUY" shirts were given out to those who went above and beyond. Mike Cassidy was the definitive "GOOD GUY." Thousands of kids received the benefit of his love of history ... I still remember listening to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" in his 8th grade class while he excitedly went over all of the lyrics and their significance. His love of his subject and his respect for his students are memories that I, and thousands of other former students, will remember forever. He will be missed.

Your belief in my ability to write and your unconditional support and guidance during my most formative years will never be forgotten. Thank you for going far beyond the role of teacher to dedicated mentor to me, and what I know must be countless other RHS students. I'll always remember your voracious love of history, quick wit and love of a good wisecrack with a bittersweet fondness. Sending you all of my gratitude, and your family my deepest condolences, on the passing of a most special spirit.

Mike, Where do I begin, I have known you for 20 years, I will always cherish our friendship. You have been a mentor to my children. You have done painting in my house many years ago. I will always remember getting you all those "scholarly journals" for your research and all those endless Andrew Jackson books . Even when you became Vice Principal, you never forgot your love for history. Your RHS family will always remember you with love and humor. Love, Camille Mazur
