Danielle posted a condolence

One weekend Oma was camping with my family. I remember walking down to the beach with Oma and my mom and I was complaining because I couldn't get any cell phone service down there. Oma looked at me and said "Danielle, look around you. Look at the trees, the beautiful sunset, the water. You can't get any of this in the city. Enjoy what you have when you can." Those words have stuck with me for the past couple of years and it always will.

Dear Jake, Carol, Margareth and family, Your mother, my aunt Aly, as I (Jaap) called her when I was young, is no longer here. I have precious memories of her from those early years. Her years at Opa and Oma Stavinga's in the Leeuwstraat in Uithuizen, the period she was working in Rotterdam, the moment she came back from the USA with your father Jan Valkema to get married in Uithuizen. Afterwards I met her just a single time and every time I felt the connection with her. Your mother died on April 4. She has been released from her illness and - in the conviction of her faith - has been taken to the Father's House above, where her Father called her. After the loss of your father, you are now missing your mother and that hurts deeply and causes sorrow. You are aware to be the oldest generation of the family Jan and Aly Valkema-Stavinga now. We wish you - in this time of grief and loss - a lot of courage. In connection with our grandparents, Jacob Stavinga and Maaike van der Meer, our thoughts go out to you and do we remember your special mother, now and for the rest of our lifetime. Jaap and Nel Stavinga

Dear family, you have our sincere condolences on the loss of Alice. We will remember “Tante Aly” as a cheerful and kind aunt. In the years she came to Holland we could always laugh and joke with her. Not only here looks, but also her character is very similar with “Oma Stavinga”. The impact of the loss of such a good (grand) mother, sister and friend is hard to imagine. We are thinking of you during this difficult time and wish you great strength in this difficult time. All our love, Noortje, Sam, Ellen en Marinus van der Ploeg (Groningen, The Netherlands).

Dear Jake, Carol, Marghreth, I'm sorry to hear your mother passed away. Even more sorry about the suffering she had to endure the last years. Although, being separated by one big ocean, we only barely met, I keep dear memories. I wish you strength in coping with this loss.

I have so many wonderful memories of her it is hard to choose just a couple. Carol and I have been best friends since we were 8 (3rd grade). I spent so much of my time as a child at the Valkema house that I feel like she was a 2nd mom to me. Always very loving and treated me like one of her own children. At one of the most difficult times in my life she opened her heart and home to me and my son Christopher until I had an apartment to move to. Alice lived her life loving God and being a true Christian always loving, never judgemental. It was an honor to know her and have her in my life all these years. She will be missed!

They say that your first memory is reflective of your childhood emotional state. My earliest memory is of my mother standing behind me as I stir hot chocolate pudding on the stove. Guiding and supporting me as I venture into new, fun territories. This is my mother to me as she was always there to support and guide me.
I had the pleasure of being there to guide and support my mother through the last hours of her life. It was a difficult journey, one which I do not ever want to go through. I wanted to be there for her just like she has always been there for me.
I will cherish the memories of Christmas, Florida vacations, games with the grandchildren, mini golf, BINGO, Matthew's, Nellie's, sitting around the campfire, Jake flipping mom in the chair, her smile, her laugh and her wonderful enduring love.
Mom loved her God so much! Although she's not here with me now, I know that she is celebrating every moment with her God the Father in Heaven. Her pain is gone. We mill miss this wonderful woman-but give thanks for the memories that she has left us with. Mom has made an important imprint on our lives that will never dull!

My wonderful Aunt Alice
An inspiration to us all
My 1st memory of her is when she came to visit us from Holland. As a young child I was nervous about sharing a room with this aunt that I didn't know, until I went to bed that night. Lying on top of my bed was a Dutch girl doll that she had brought for me. I was so happy and I think she knew that one small gesture would help overcome any nervousness I was feeling and it did!
I will miss her a lot.

I always called her my sweet animal! I always loved when she would go camping with us. Whenever she would visit us in South Dakota, she would always ask me to make walleye for her. When I would say, "I can't make that again," she would say, "Well, then, let's go out to eat tonight." When the server asked what she would like to order, then she would say, "I would like walleye, please." What a sweetheart!
