Obituary of Charles Muscarelle

Charles W. Muscarelle, Sr., a philanthropist and retired construction executive, age 91, died peacefully at home on March 22, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Garfield, he was a resident of Saddle River, New Jersey. Mr. Muscarelle was the devoted husband of the late Antoinette Vitrano Muscarelle, loving father of son Charles (Cathy) Muscarelle, and daughter Cheryl Muscarelle Scibetta. He was the cherished grandfather of Tyler (Danielle), Justin, and Jarred (Sarah) Nowell, Lori Scibetta (John) Brennan, Matthew, Courtney (Greg) Matonti, Colby (Amy) and Ashley Muscarelle, and ten great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Concetta Corso. Charles was predeceased by his brothers Joseph, Samuel, and Ralph Muscarelle, and sisters Grace Calendrillo and Sadie DePalma. Mr. Muscarelle spent his entire career with Joseph L. Muscarelle, Inc. He joined the firm in 1936, and became a partner in 1949. During his tenure he served in various positions, working his way up from Time Keeper and Cost Analysis Superintendent, to General Superintendent, Vice President of Field Operations, Partner and Officer in the firm and its' subsidiaries. He was named Executive Vice President in 1965, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. Mr. Muscarelle received awards for meritorious service from Bergen-Passaic Building Contractors Association of New Jersey, and a citation for outstanding contributions from the Girl Scout Council of Bergen County. The main roadway to the Girl Scout Camp Glen Spey, N. Y., is named after him in recognition of his leadership and hard work. He served on the Board of Directors of Joseph L. Muscarelle, Inc., the Girl Scout Council of Bergen County, the Board of Trustees of Bergen Passaic Contractors Association of New Jersey, New Jersey Building Contractors Association, and Bergen County Carpenter Pension and Welfare Fund. Charles was an Army veteran who served our country during World War II. Mr. Muscarelle enjoyed golf and was a member of the Hackensack Country Club ~ where he proudly hit a hole in one! He also loved to read, play cards, travel and spend time with his family. Visiting, Thursday, 7:00 to 9:00 PM and Friday, 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, 10:30 AM at St. Gabriel's R.C. Church, 88 East Saddle River Road, Saddle River, followed by entombment at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Memory of Charles W. Muscarelle, Sr., to the Center For Food Action, 90 Ridge Road., Mahwah, NJ, 07430, or Valley Hospice, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
