In researching the local Nike missile base, I spoke to Richard several times about his memories of military duty in Mahwah. Richard remembered that he might have some items in his basement related to his service which he could donate to a Mahwah Museum display/presentation I was working on. At one point he said that it would be hard to find because he had many things stored in the basement, but he would look again.
In interviewing veterans who served at the same Army base, one sent in a writeup of his memories of Richard that was very complimentary regarding his technical prowness in repairing the complex Nike missile system. This veteran's impression was that Richard memorized all the complex electronic schematics and never had to look at the printed versions. He could also best the local warrant officer, who was supposed to be the highest technical level at the Nike base in rapidly finding the cause of problems and repairing them.
May he rest in peace!
