Obituary of Walter Streaser

STREASER, Walter J., age 86, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 29, 2011. Born and raised in Morningside Heights, NY, he married his beloved wife Margaret Mary at Corpus Christie Church. They moved to Oakland, NJ in 1956 where they raised their family and later moved to Shawnee on the Delaware, PA. In 1992, they moved to Mahwah, NJ. In 1939 Walter left high school to help support his family. Walter turned down an offer to play semi-pro baseball. Instead, in 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy where he became a radio man, 3rd class aboard the light cruiser U.S.S. San Diego. During his service, the ship earned eleven battle stars and was the first war ship in Tokyo Bay prior to the Japanese surrender. During his service in the Navy, Walter earned his G.E.D. and later attended Columbia University, NYC. He began his career in the metal industry at Eastern Rolling Mills, Bronx, NY where he worked for 27 years and achieved the level of district sales manager. Walter later co-founded and was president of Superior Aluminum Corporation, Franklin Lakes, NJ. Sports, especially baseball, and coaching recreation leagues were a big part of his life. Walter is survived by his four dear children: Carol Ann Streaser of Newburgh, NY, Peggy MacFarlane of Warwick, NY, Walter Brian and wife Nancy of Ridgewood and Terrence Michael and wife Susan of Glen Rock. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Donny, Jamie and Christopher MacFarlane; Kate and Emily Hunter; Scott and Jennifer Streaser; Diamo and Kelly Streaser, three great-grandchildren; Reese, Katahvyah and William, his sister Dorothy Montero of Mahwah and his niece Lorraine Woehrle of Alexandria, VA. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret Mary in 2010, his sister Florence Murphy Hall and his brother John Murphy. Friends may visit the family on Thursday, 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff. Funeral Mass, Friday, 10:00 AM at St. Elizabeth's R.C. Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Valley Hospital Foundation, 223 N. Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450, would be appreciated.
