I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Betty was a dear woman who was so generous and loving in everything she did. I loved our days at GMWS and our special time together. The Onderdonk's were my second family for many years. I will always remember your mom's support and friendship. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. With love. Sip

Dear John, Paul, Amy, Beth and Chris, I stayed with your mom for three years worth of Kindergarten teacher training at Sunbridge College. We were a bad influence on each other, as neither of us seemed to get around to what we were supposed to be doing when we were together....me late for classes at Sunbridge, Betty late for appointments. But we had so much fun together, laughing at the craziest things, watching "bird t.v." out your kitchen window, admiring the sheer bravado of the woodpeckers stealing food from the smaller birds, dreaming up plans of felting or crafting together, talking about our love for so many things and people. She talked about all of you with such love, understanding and deep pride. You were the collective apple of her eye. Although she voiced some regrets about letting go of her teaching career it was readily apparent that she made the choice that mattered most to her, family and then grandchildren. On my graduation day of teacher training, Jack died and I played my harp for his funeral. Once again, you all felt oddly like family to me. I still remember taking Beth's baby for a walk so that you all could write Jack's obituary. Betty and I used to wonder at the similarities between our two families. I am the eldest of five children, from a close knit, eccentric family with two parents who bickered a fair amount, but adored each other. The February after Jack's death, we were looking at a box of condolence letters, and I read a note about Betty's birthday. It came as another shock, to realize that we shared the same birthday, July 31st! This February I went to the kindergarten conference and declined to share a room at the Marriott with my colleagues, preferring to sleep on Betty's living room floor. We laughed, talked too much, drank coffee, admired the birds and I was late for the conference every blasted morning. Betty's warm company made it impossible for me to be on time for anything serious, but she filled my heart with gladness every time I was with her. My mom died two summers ago and it shook my family to the very core. I know that you are enduring much the same, and....you all have each other. Take care of one another and know how much I enjoyed and appreciated your Mom. With love, Jody Grossman

Betty Schilling Onderdonk was a treasure to our family because she was our first child's first intro to school in 1960. We had moved from Ohio to Ridgewood, NJ. Our child, Lauren Ladd (now Meister) really bonded with her Kindergarten teacher and that helped her get over her sadness at the move. I remember Betty sharing her wedding plans with the class and that was a great thrill for the children. That year was a memorable one for Lauren and our family and the proof of that is that I still remember as does my daughter who is now in North Carolina. Betty will be teaching the angels more to sing now!

My brother, sister and I attended Somerville School in Ridgewood in the late 50',early 60"s. I remember "Miss Shilling" as a wonderful, caring, fun Kindergarten teacher. I believe she became Mrs. Onderdonk when my sister was in her class. I dont remember too much about those days but do remember how exciting it was to have your "teacher" get married. My deepest sympathy to you family.

We will always have the most loving memories of our Aunt Betty. Some of the fondest childhood impressions I have were from the Onderdonk house, and all the happy activity that was constantly underway. Aunt Betty was always at the center of all that, and somehow kept it all moving and kept everyone laughing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Onderdonks and our whole extended family.
