Gwen, I am so sorry to hear about your loss :( I remember so well meeting your mom at your new condo when you got it and how similar you two were! She had such an obvious sweet joie de vivre and she loved you so so much. I know how close your family is and how many sweet memories you all must have. Keep those close to you now because she will always be with you, your whole life. Miss you and wish I could give you a big giant hug. Love, Danit

I was so fortunate to work with Maureen as an aide in my second year at Smith School, with the current class or 2011. As Maureen wrote in a recommendation for me, I was her "eyes and ears" in the social studies class with her students and then also assisted her in study skills. She allowed me to acquire teaching skills and encouraged me to become a special education teacher. As important, I was able to observe a master teacher and to learn from her about using technology, engaging students, creating student-centered lessons, developing positive class management, and the need for humor. You were the epitome of excellence in teaching. I can never thank you enough, Maureen, for all you gave to me...support, encouragement, praise, guidance, and friendship! I will treasure you always and you will be with me, in my heart, forever!
Love, Pam

Dear Walt, Gwen, and Chrissy, Maureen was our very special friend for over 27 years. Her smile lit up the room, and her sense of humor kept us laughing. We remember all the marching band concerts we went to together, and Chrissy playing trumpet with our son, Gregory. She so enjoyed coming to our Passover Seders with Walt, and we all delighted in listening to her stories about her students, with whom she loved working. We saw how proud she was of Chrissy and Gwen at their respective weddings, and heard about her sheer bliss of playing with Matthew and Owen. She was the consummate friend, who took great pleasure in wanting to prove she could make chicken soup, when she brought us an entire meal after my hip replacement. We will feel her absence at our biweekly card game. Maureen was taken much too early from us, and we will miss her terribly. Chrissy and Gwen, we love you and Walt. Walt, know that we will be knocking on your door. With great fondness and much love, Marilyn and Charlie

A life is not measured by counting the years, but rather how those years have counted. Maureen's life truly counted for much. Gwen and Chrissy, her legacy lives on in you. Walt and Maureen raised two beautiful daughters and brought much love to all their family. As an educator, Maureen touched the lives of students and colleagues. She was the ultimate professional - involved with students, who knew that she loved them, and with teachers, who respected her greatly. I was privileged to work with her side by side for over 30 years. I will miss you greatly my friend. We shared many joys and sorrows. I know that Walt, Chrissy and Gwen will continue on because you have made them strong and have shown them how to fight on.

Every September a set of new math students would enter my classroom and they were always "Maureen's Bunch ". My new eighth graders would often comment, " Mrs. Kaulfers taught us that trick, or Mrs. Kaulfers was so funny, or I miss Mrs. Kaulfers, or Mrs. Kaulfers did it that way. To put my students at ease, I'd let them visit Maureen for a jolly rancher or an occasional treat. In May, they were still asking to visit Mrs.Kaulfers. They continued to have a connection to her wonderful and creative teaching techniques.
In addition, the first month of every Friday, Maureen, Louise, Rose Mary and I would meet for dinner and wine. Occasionally, a few other friends would join us for our," Big Friday Date". We had such fun and so much laughter. It was a monthly chance to have good food, great wine, and share wonderful friendships.
It has been a year since I moved to Charleston, and our monthly dinners are one of the things I still miss. On my last visit with Maureen, I told her I would look forward to our next Friday evening together.
Well dear friend, future Friday dinners will always incude you; a class of your
pink rose wine and a special toast to a kind, beautiful, and spirited Maureen!
You will be our my prayers and thoughts forever,
Love, Marlene

I will never forget the year I had her for 7th grade.
She made me feel special and loved.
She had a way of making the whole class feel like we were her very own children.
Our connection was very strong, and she welcomed me so often after school for any extra help, even after exiting this school, she was so welcoming to see me return for visits.
God Bless you Mrs. Kaulfers, the time I knew you has truly touched my soul.
I will never forget you,,
Rest in Peace

To me, Mrs. Kaulfers defined the word 'Mom'. I remember going through my own personal struggles growing up, and Mrs. K. stepped in and treated me like her own. She opened her home, heart and most importantly her refrigerator! She always made sure I was fed and believe you me I was never shy raiding the Kaulfers refrigerator and pantry ;-) Bottom line, Mrs. K. was truly a Mother figure to me; I learned so much from her. I will forever cherish all my adolescent memories of Mrs. K. and her beautiful family! I am very fortunate to have known such a remarkable woman and human being. You were taken too soon Mrs. Kaulfers...aka: My 2nd Mom! You will be missed everyday! Love always and forever, Elke 'Your Brunette Daughter'. xoxo

Most people will say there are no words and there aren't any. Nothing will give you solace or mitigate your grief.Time is the only thing that will give you acceptance and peace. To Gwen and Chrissy, please know that our thoughts are with you now and for years to come as I know very well how this process affects and hurts those who loved her most. Though I was never close to Maureen, what I do know of her and about her is that she raised two excellent daughters that are now mothers themselves and can see in your own children, bits and pieces of their grandmother's spirit, character and probably the twinkle in her smile. To her husband Walter I am saddened by the loosing of a lifelong partner so early in their travel together. With much care, Ana & James Shute

Maureen and I were talking recently, and Maureen said, "When I get better I'm going to help others. So many people are preparing and bringing food for Walt and me and doing other things too, and I realize how important it is to help others." My head spun several 360 degrees, and I looked at her in astonishment. I know for all the times she helped me through my traumas and dramas, and she even spackled and painted in my house! (Note: That was not Maureen's thing!) She was always doing something for family. At school, she was always trying to create new ways for her students to learn and she mentored teachers to become better teachers. She volunteered for Girl Scouts for seven years and many years at church.
I am sure each reader can probably think of one or two ways, Maureen helped them. I take this time to thank you, Maureen. You are loved and will be missed by me and many others. Your sister, Ca.

Dear Walt, Gwen, and Chrissie, Words can't express how heavy my heart is at learning of Maureen's passing. she fought valiantly against a cruel adversary, and I'm sad that I was unable to see her during her long ordeal. As a teacher, Maureen excelled, helping untold numbers of students reach their maximum potential. She was such a valuable asset to Team 7-1, and it was an honor to work with her. And she gave generously and graciously of herself by hosting so many gatherings of teachers at your beautiful home and by leading the RTA with strength and skill. Ramsey has lost a superior teacher, whom no one can ever replace. Above all, she cherished her family. Maureen was so happy and proud, Gwen and Chrissie, to see you both married happily and settled in life. And she was able to know and love her two precious grandchildren, the loves of her life. Indeed, Maureen left her mark on the world, despite having left it so sadly and entirely too soon. Steve joins me in offering all of you our most profound sympathy. Love, Susan Sorkenn
