Mary Gates posted a condolence

To the Brickman family, I am Mary Gates from Quincy, IL. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Jim's death. When Jim was in high school he would visit his grandmother Dorothy Thomas who was best friends with my Mother. They introduced us, and I looked forward to seeing Jim whenever he came to Quincy. Even though it was over forty years ago, I still remember his gentleness and the fun times we had together. What a successful life he had and a family to be proud of, I'm sure. I taught at Quincy High School with his aunt Rachael Banks, and her daughter Deb taught my oldest child in second grade. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone in the family about what happened. God bless you. You are in my prayers, Mary Gates

I had the great pleasure of knowing Jim from working with him in business transactions and when were both very active in various positions in the American Bar Association. I can echo what others have said with respect to Jim being a consummate gentleman. He was a fine man, completely ethical, clever guy and a pleasure to be with. I send my condolences. I personally will miss him greatly.

I, too, was a friend of Jim's through the American Bar Association, and then through collaboration on various professional projects. He was generous with his time and insights, an easy and open friend. It is notable that two special characteristics that came immediately to my mind when thinking of Jim have already been cited: he was a gentleman, and he had a wry, delightful sense of humor. I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew Jim through the ABA Tax Section beginning shortly after I graduate from law school in the lat 70s. He was a great lawyer and a wonderful person. He was always willing to help lawyers think through difficult issues, particularly junior lawyers who were trying to figure out how pension plans really worked. He will be missed.
