Obituary of Hedwig New
NEW, Hedy beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died August 30 at the age of 87. Born Hedwig Gertrude Schuetz on February 29, 1920 to Carl and Elizabeth Schuetz in Cologne, Germany, she immigrated to New York City with her parents and brother, Joseph, when she was four years old. At 18 she married her late husband, William Otto New, and the couple eventually settled in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ where they raised their two daughters, Carol and Arlene. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church and an active member of the seniors' club. She also enjoyed traveling to Europe to visit her cousins, going to lunch with her many neighborhood friends, playing with her cat, Patches, a stray she rescued ten years ago during a rain storm, and spending as much time as possible with her family. Hedy is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Carol and Ray Proulx, Arlene and Stuart French; her four granddaughters: Kristen (French) Dempsey, Nicole (Proulx) Lookingbill, Kimberley (French) Perry, and Danielle Proulx; and her four great-grandchildren: Sydney and Cole Perry, Caitlin Lookingbill, and Nathaniel Dempsey. A private funeral service for family will be held for Hedy New on Wednesday. Relatives and friends are welcome at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com) 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ on Tuesday, September 4 from 2 - 4PM and 7 - 9 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hedy's favorite charity, the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge, 2 Shelter Lane, Oakland, NJ 07436.
