Obituary of Cornelius Spyckaboer
SPYCKABOER, Cornelius, Jr. "Spike" age 78 of Mahwah and Wyckoff, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. Spike was born in Wyckoff on March 18, 1931 where he lived for many years before moving to Mahwah 23 years ago. He spent the last 1 ½ at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff. In his early career, Spike was a self-employed carpenter. He also worked in asphalt paving with R. Douma and Son and Peter Englishman. In1996 he retired from the Glen Rock Board of Education where he worked as a custodian in the Glen Rock High School. Spike served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Midland Park-Wyckoff VFW Post 7086 and the American Legion Post 130 in Midland Park. Spike was a member of the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff. Surviving are his sons, Dennis Spyckaboer and his wife Robyn of Wyckoff and Douglas Spyckaboer and his wife Phyllis of Charlotte, NC. He also leaves his sister Cornelia Hagedorn of Midland Park. Spike was pre-deceased by his wife Elizabeth (nee Kuiken) in 1963. Funeral services will be held Monday 9:30 am at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff. Interment will follow in the Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa. Visiting is Sunday 3:00 until 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christian Health Care Center Employee Fund, 301 Sicomac Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481.
