Obituary of Barney Van Dyk

VAN DYK, Barney, age 102, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, November 22, 2009. To most he was known as either: Pop Pop, Uncle Barney, or Mr. Barney. He was loved and admired by all who knew him. He often spoke of his early years growing up in Paterson and selling fruits and vegetables off the back of a horse drawn wagon. He later went on to operate a thriving butcher shop and grocery store on Park Ave in Paterson. Barney was first married to Amoniza "Teenie" Van Dyk and they had two sons, Marvin and William. After Teenie's death he remarried and spent 25 years with Evelyn Deinum Van Dyk and the two resided in Wyckoff where Barney remained after Evelyn's death in 2007. Barney died at Van Dyk Manor in Ridgewood. This is the nursing home that Barney and his two sons operated for the past 56 years. It was appropriate that he passed away comfortably on a quiet sunny Sunday morning in the nursing home where he and his family have helped so many other families over the years. Barney was a deeply religious man whose daily routine included hours of time in prayer for his family and the many people whom he cared about. He was active his whole life in the Hawthorne Gospel Church where he frequently served as chairman of the Church board. He would tell anyone how important his church, his relationship with the Lord, and his family were to him. In recent years his spare time was spent following "his" Yankees. How fitting that the Yankees gave him one more World series before he left us. Barney is survived by his two sons, Marvin and William, his daughter-in-law, Gertrude(Marvin's wife) , seven grandchildren Robert Van Dyk, Kathleen Van Elswyk and her husband Jim, Joyce Romine and her husband Jerry, Wendy Abma, Susan Aalderink and her husband Steve, Jonathan Van Dyk and his wife Eileen, and Matthew Van Dyk, and his great grandchildren James Van Elswyk, Brice Van Elswyk, Connor Van Elswyk, Reed Van Dyk, Kristina Van Dyk, Jason Romine and his wife Chrissy, Jennifer Romine, Kayleigh Abma, Samantha Abma, Julia Aalderink, Lilah Aalderink, Sadie Aalderink, Anthony Van Dyk, Daniel Van Dyk and Emily Van Dyk. Pop Pop, Uncle Barney, Mr Barney, was loved by all and will be missed even more. Visiting hours will be Friday, November 27 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Hawthorne Gospel Church followed by a funeral service at 11:00am, at the Hawthorne Gospel Church, 2000 Route 208, Hawthorne, NJ. A private grave side service for the immediate family will follow. Arrangements by the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, NJ, www.vpfh.com. The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to either Hawthorne Gospel Missions, 2000 Route 208, Hawthorne, NJ 07506, Word of Life, PO Box 600, Schroon Lake, NY, 12870-0600, or Operation Mobilization, PO Box 444, Tyrone, GA 30290-0444.
